WARRIORS PLACE 5TH OVERALL AT STATE

Cedar Falls, IA – The Indian Hills Sports Shooting squad placed fifth overall at the Iowa Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) State Championship. In three combined events, the Warriors recorded a High Overall (HOA) team score of 1660 out of a possible 1800 targets.

Competing in the trap, skeet, and sporting clays events against members of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference, the Warriors put together a strong showing of individual performances that left head coach Jake Stalzer impressed with his team's effort over the weekend.

"This is the most talented trap squad I've ever had the privilege of coaching," Stalzer stated. Looking back on last year's state trap scores we improved by 51 targets. Overall, I'm happy with the direction this sport is headed. It was good to see all three events together at the same venue this weekend. Hopefully the sport in college, and at all levels, continues to grow and all the disciplines become more recognized."

The Warriors opened up the weekend with 100 trap targets on Saturday. Josh Meyer (Bettendorf, IA/Bettendorf) posted a 98, missing just one target in the second and third rounds to pace the Warriors. Indian Hills completed its second round of 100 targets on Sunday and finished with an overall team score of 945/1000 to place seventh overall in the event. Meyer and Zachary Ross (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) led the way with a 192 each, followed by Nathan Dunsbergen's (Knoxville, IA/Pella) 189 and a 186 from both Jaxton Elliott (Bloomfield, IA/Ottumwa) and Landon Hubble to round out the scoring.

"Even though the placement results don't show it, I thought we shot very well in trap," Stalzer added. "This year's 4-8 place teams were only separated by 15 targets," Stalzer noted. "Goes to show every target matters. That is one thing we struggled with this year was consistency with scores from round to round. We're improving every year, but so is everyone else. With Josh, Zach, Jax, Cole Van Nest), Dylan Mohr (Moulton, IA/Scotland County), & Cooper Shelton (Chariton, IA/Chariton) all graduating this spring/summer, we need a few freshmen to step up and take on those leadership roles we will be losing. Proud of Nathan and Landon for doing that this weekend and cracking into our top 5."

The Warriors took home fifth place in the skeet with a team score of 394/500. Meyer totaled 86 targets for the Warriors while Dunsbergen added an 85 followed by Landon Hubble's (Knox City, MO/Knox) 81. The Warriors' strongest showing came in the sporting clays, placing fourth overall. Dunsbergen connected on 73 targers followed by 67 from Shelton and 64 from Meyer.

Camme Barber (Oskloosa, IA/Oskloosa) recorded 61 targets in the sporting clays to receive medalist honors, placing fifth overall in the ladies division.

"The wind was really affecting the targets, our shooters made good adjustments and battled through it the best they could," Stalzer noted. "We had better results on Sunday and that helped bump us up to fifth place for High Overall (HOA) on the weekend.
