IHCC Softball Starts Conference Play With Sweep

West Burlington, Iowa -- The Indian Hills softball team had been weathered out of its previous six games and its readiness to get back on the diamond showed in a doubleheader sweep of conference rival Southeastern on Tuesday. The Warriors plated four runs in the top of the 1st inning of game one and went on to win, 6-5, then tallied six runs in the 1st inning of the nightcap and polished off the Blackhawks, 10-4, to get the league season started on the right foot.

IHCC, the two-time defending Region 11 champs, didn't waste any time in the opener, using a two-run single by Sierra Walton and a two-run double by Kassidi Henderson to grab a quick 4-0 lead. Henderson had a day to remember, adding to her early two-RBI single with a couple of homers and seven RBIs in game two. The nine runs-batted-in gives the sophomore 23 for the season.

After running away to the early advantage in the first game, the Warriors had to hold off a late SCC rally. Jorgi Krieger's homer in the bottom of the 6th made it a 6-5 game, but IHCC pitcher Marissa Promes retired the final five hitters she faced to preserve the victory. The final two Indian Hills runs scored on an Erin Kuba groundout and an SCC error.

Henderson's monster effort in the second game included a grand slam home run in the 1st inning and a three-run shot in the 5th. Indian Hills led 9-0 after 4 1/2 innings. Southeastern scored all four of its runs in the 5th. The Warriors pounded out 15 hits. Walton started the scoring in this game too with a first-inning two-run double, prior to Henderson's slam.

Indian Hills, with a 17-7 overall record and 2-0 conference mark, will have a busy weekend with road twinbills at league foes Iowa Western on Saturday and Marshalltown on Sunday.
