Warriors Fall Twice to Top-Ranked Kirkwood

Ottumwa -- Kirkwood, which earlier in the week ascended to the top spot in the NJCAA Division II rankings, clubbed seven home runs and defeated Indian Hills in both games of a doubleheader on Wednesday, winning 9-2 and 5-1 at R.L. Hellyer Field.

The Eagles slammed five of the round-trippers in the first game, a two-run shot by Maddie Hansen setting the tempo in the 1st inning. The Warriors were held scoreless until Erin Kuba's two-run single scored Abby Straight and Taylor Jones in the 6th inning. Olivia Goodale, the reigning ICCAC Pitcher of the Week, started and took the loss for IHCC.

All of Kirkwood's scoring in game two came from the long ball -- a two-out three-run homer by DoniRae Mayhew that broke a 0-0 tie in the 5th and a two-run blow by Taylor Nearad in the 7th. Both Mayhew and Nearad had also homered in the first game. Indian Hills got on the board in the 6th on a run-scoring hit by Lexi Smith. Sophomore Marissa Promes suffered the defeat.

The Warriors wrap up conference play on Saturday when they host Marshalltown CC in a doubleheader. They will play two games at Kirkwood next Tuesday.
