IHCC Grabs Region Title Thanks to Smith's Big Bat

Council Bluffs -- In a Region 11 tournament thats start was delayed by rain, Lexi Smith made sure that the Indian Hills Warriors' bid for another region title wasn't delayed as the IHCC freshman knocked in all five runs in a clinching 5-4 win against Iowa Western on Tuesday.

Smith had a three-run double to tie the score in the 3rd inning, then a game-winning two-run home run in the bottom of the 5th and the Warriors made it a clean sweep in the tournament, postponed for a total of three days. Indian Hills defeated each of the other three Region 11 teams to move on to this weekend's district tournament.

When play got underway on Monday, Indian Hills knocked off Marshalltown, 7-1, with Abby Straight turning in a five-hit performance in the circle and the Warriors scoring all seven of their runs in the first four innings. That included a four-run 3rd. Shyanne DuBois doubled and homered and knocked in three runs, Taylor Jones was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, Sierra Walton also drove in a run, and Kassidi Henderson collected two hits.

The next game, against Southeastern, was scoreless until IHCC broke through with two runs against the Blackhawks' Hally Greenough in the bottom of the 5th. They added a run in the 6th and Goodale made those runs stand up with a masterful effort, blanking SCC on four hits with six Ks and no walks. Walton's homer accounted for one of the runs and the others were driven in by Taylor Takushi and Taylor Jones. DuBois, and Keagan Helson also scored. Helson had three hits and Takushi, Walton and Henderson all had two-hit games. Takushi swiped a couple of bases.

Iowa Western jumped ahead in the title contest with two runs in the 1st and added one in the 2nd. Smith tied it at 3 with her third-inning double. After the Reivers went back on top in the top of the 5th, Smith's dinger in the bottom of the inning proved to be the game-winner. After the Smith home run Goodale got the final six outs without incident and the Warriors claimed the Region 11 hardware.
