Warriors Net Sweep in Kansas

2016-17 Volleyball Team Raising Hands together

Barton, Kansas -- The 7th-ranked Indian Hills volleyball team made the long trip to western Kansas a profitable one, doubling their season win total and avenging one of their two losses in sweeping all four matches in the Cougar Classic, hosted by Barton Community College.  The Warriors posted 3-0 wins against Lamar (25-10-25-13, 25-18) and Casper (26-16, 25-16, 25-22) on Friday, then got a measure of revenge against No. 6 Western Nebraska, who had defeated IHCC in the Iowa Western tournament the previous weekend, beating WNCC 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-19) before disposing of Trinidad State (25-23, 25-20, 25-13) Saturday to close the tourney with a season record of 8-2.

Freshman Thayna Birimba led the Warriors in kills in three of the four matches and freshman setter Yasmin Assis was credited with 30 assists in the win over Casper and a whopping 39 when the Warriors knocked off Western Nebraska, 10 more than IHCC's opponent's team total.

Birimba had seven kills and Camila Nicoletti 10 digs against Lamar.  Shenglan Chen provided support with five blocks.

Assis had 15 assists, Chen nine digs and Birimba a dozen kills in the Casper match.

IHCC, which had lost to Western Nebraska 3-1 a week before, got 16 kills from Jessica DaSilva and 10 more from Birimba in defeating the Cougars in their return match.  Birimba also chipped in 10 digs and Chen seven blocks.

Freshman Laisa Telles Maeda took over the primary setter role against Trinidad State and had 33 assists.  Brooke Johnson-Watkins accumulated four blocks, Nicoletti had 25 digs and Birimba and DaSilva combined for 27 kills as Indian Hills concluded an impressive sweep.

The Warriors will be on the road for a pair of contests this week:  at Southeastern Tuesday and Jefferson (MO) College on Friday.
