IHCC Has Rough Weekend at Hutch

Hutchinson, Kansas -- The 6th-ranked Indian Hills volleyball team knocked off Frank Phillips College, 3-1, on Saturday for their only victory in four matches in the Blue Dragon Classic.  The Warriors lost their first three tests in the tourney, including a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the host school, Hutchinson, and a pair of 3-2 losses, one of them to No. 17 Navarro.

The Warriors started the classic by losing 3-2 to Northeastern (Colo.) JC, which took the 5th set, 15-9, after Indian Hills won sets two and four.  Jessica Da Silva led the Warriors at the net with 17 kills, hitting .273.  IHCC had 67 digs and four Warriors collected 12 or more.  Shenglan Chen led with 15 digs and Camila Nicoletti added 14.  Setter Laisa Telles Maeda was credited with 52 assists.

Hutchinson made quick work of the Warriors in Friday's second match, winning 25-14, 25-14, 25-23.  Da Silva again produced 17 kills and Maeda had 26 assists.  Nicoletti was tops with 10 digs.

The battle between two ranked teams went to Navarro, which prevailed 17-15 in a tense 5th set.  The Warriors again got strong net play from Da Silva, who compiled 31 kills, and Brooke Johnson-Watkins and Raegan Moeller, who had seven and six blocks, respectively.  Maeda had 60 assists and Thayna Birimba 13 digs for IHCC.

The Warriors were finally able to get into the win column in their second match on Saturday, beating Frank Phillips (Tex.) 3-1.  The victory came after Indian Hills lost the opening set 25-19, then stormed back in the next three sets, winning 25-15, 25-18 and 25-22.  Da Silva finished off an outstanding tourney with another 16 kills, giving her 81 for the four matches.  Maeda likewise finished strong, amassing 49 assists for a four-match total of 187, an average of nearly 47 per match.  Nicoletti had a dozen digs to help Indian Hills pick up its 15th win of the season against six losses.

Indian Hills has a road conference match at Marshalltown on Wednesday.
