WARRIOR STAFF SALVAGES SPLIT VS. NO. 17 COWLEY

Arkansas City, KS – The Indian Hills Baseball team salvaged a split on the second day of a three-day series with No. 17 Cowley College (KS) as the Warriors earned a 1-0 victory in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader. The Warriors dropped a thriller in the opener, 7-6.

After falling to the Tigers in the series opener on Saturday, Indian Hills bounced back on Sunday with the afternoon split. The Warriors used a late rally in the opener to tie the game in seventh, but a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh lifted Cowley to the win. In the nightcap, the Warriors used a trio of pitchers for a dominant performance on the mound to secure the upset.

The Warriors struck first in the opener as sophomore Merrick Mathews (Centerville, IA/Centerville) delivered an RBI single in the top of the first. After a run from the Tigers in the bottom half, Jason Schaaf (Las Vegas, NV/Palo Verde) scored in the top of the second to regain the lead.

Indian Hills went ahead 3-1 in the fourth after an RBI triple from Daniel Figueroa (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico/Leadership Christian Academy), but a four-run fourth from the Tigers lifted the home team to a 6-4 advantage. Cowley tacked on another in the sixth to extend the lead.

The Warriors rallied in the seventh thanks to a hit by pitch and three consecutive walks to bring in two runs. Freshman Logan Myers (Andover, MN/Andover) delivered an RBI single to tie the game at six, scoring Jesus Rodriguez (Dominican Republic/Life Prep Academy) for the equalizer.

The Tigers took advantage of an error and two base hits in the bottom half of the inning to take the walk-off victory over the Warriors.

Sunday's finale saw a gem of a performance from freshman Andres Beltran (Delray Beach, FL/Atlantic) on the mound. The right-handed hurler tossed five scoreless innings while scattering three hits with seven strikeouts in his first career start.

Beltran kept the Tigers scoreless through the first five frames before Indian Hills found the first run of the game. Indian Hills threatened in the sixth with three straight singles to open the frame before Luis Martinez (Vega Baja, PR/El Shaddai Christian Academy) delivered a sacrifice fly to score Ciro Benavides (Laredo, TX/Alexander) for the 1-0 advantage.

Freshman Adam Golby (Coronation, Alberta/South Central) took over on the mound and produced a scoreless sixth before sophomore Sam Hart (Highlands Ranch, CO/ThunderRidge) took hold of the seventh. Hart struck out the first two batters before a two-out walk, but the sophomore closed out the game in dominant fashion with his third punchout of the frame.

Hart, the University of Iowa signee, picked up his third save in as many attempts this year and has allowed just one base hit this year.

The Warriors and Tigers close out the four-game series Monday afternoon with a 12:00 PM matchup at the Cowley Baseball facility.
