WARRIORS STUMBLE ON THE ROAD AT SOUTHEASTERN

Burlington, IA – The Indian Hills Baseball team battled from behind at Southeastern Community College, but came up just short in a 3-2 loss on the road to the Blackhawks on Friday. The Warriors fall to 30-17 overall and 19-12 in league play.

Originally scheduled for a conference doubleheader, Friday's matchup was delayed due to weather-related issues and was moved to a single nine-inning contest at Community Field, home of the Burlington Bees. The Blackhawks struck first with a run in each of the first two frames. Indian Hills tied the game with a pair of runs in the fifth, but a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the seventh for Southeastern proved to be the eventual game-winner.

Freshman Ciro Benavides (Laredo, TX/John B. Alexander) knocked in the Warriors' first run in the fifth with an RBI single to score Dylan Sayles (Rockton, IL/Hononegah). A two out sacrifice bunt from Raul Torres (Caguas, Puerto Rico/Leadership Christian Academy) allowed Miguel Salazar (Sentaines, Venezuela/San Luis) to cross the plate for the tying run, but the Warriors left the bases loaded to end the threat.

Salazar finished the game with the team's lone extra base hit with a double. Benavides, Sayles, Torres, and Logan Myers (Andover, MN/Andover) tallied the rest of the Warriors' five hits.

Sophomore Jack Nelson (Zionsville, IN/Zionsville Community) went five innings in the start with three strikeouts and one earned run allowed. Nathan Smithburg (Fairfield, IA/Fairfield) worked a scoreless 1.1 innings of relief work. Smithburg has not allowed a run in his last four appearances and has been tagged with just one earned run in his last appearances.

The two teams return to action Saturday afternoon for a conference doubleheader. Action gets underway at 2:00 PM.
