Centerville, IA – Matt Torrez has announced his resignation as head coach of the Indian Hills Baseball team. Torrez steps down after seven years at the helm of the program.
In seven seasons at Indian Hills, Torrez led the squad to 205 victories, two National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DI Baseball Region 11 Championships, and a berth in the 2021 JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, CO. Indian Hills won at least 30 games five times under Torrez.
"This game has given me everything," stated Torrez, "and coaching here has been one of the greatest honors of my life. It's never easy to step away from something you love, but I feel the time is right to explore the next chapter in my life and career. Mrs. Patti (Torrez) and I have chosen to move closer to our family to watch our grandchildren grow. I'm proud of the culture we've built, the young men we've helped grow, and the memories we've created on and off the field."
Torrez, who was named the NJCAA Region 11 Coach of the Year in 2021, coached 52 NJCAA All-Region 11 selections, three Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Defensive Players of the Year, and one ICCAC Co-Pitcher of the Year.
Academically, the program was named an NJCAA Academic Team of the Year in each of Torrez's seven seasons at the helm. Indian Hills saw over 300 Academic All-Region 11 honors and more than 40 NJCAA All-Academic accolades.
"Coach Torrez has been an incredible leader for our baseball program over the past seven years," stated Indian Hills Athletic Director Kelsi Weeks. "He has built a strong foundation, developed outstanding student-athletes, and forged meaningful relationships that will leave a lasting impact with both Indian Hills and the Centerville community. We are grateful for his dedication and wish him nothing but the best in his next chapter."
One of the most storied junior college baseball programs in the country, Indian Hills has made 12 trips to the JUCO World Series while winning 18 NJCAA Region 11 Championships and 12 NJCAA District titles.
A national search for the 10th head coach in Indian Hills Baseball history is underway. "Our priority is finding someone who shares our values and can build on the strong foundation coach Torrez established and maintained – both on the field and in the community."
