Harris Signs with UTSA

Ottumwa --- A player who appeared in two national tournaments and was on teams that won over 60 games the past two seasons at Indian Hills Community College is headed to Conference USA to continue his career. J.R. Harris has signed a letter of intent with the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Harris, a Baton Rouge, Louisiana native, was a key reserve for the Warriors as a freshman, and then started a team-high 31 games this past season. He boosted his averages from 4.6 points and 2.5 rebounds to 9.8 points and 3.0 rebounds as a sophomore. Harris was the Warriors' second-best 3-point shooter, making 49 threes.

Describing his two years at Indian Hills as "awesome," Harris said he felt comfortable on the IHCC campus and in the basketball program from day one. "Coach (Barret) Peery and coach (John) Wardenburg really helped me mature with their positive attitudes and the way they improved my game," Harris said. "Being at Indian Hills has been a great experience. The program is very family-oriented and the environment surrounding the program is unbelievable."

At UTSA, Harris will be playing under coach Brooks Thompson for a team that was 14-16 in 2014-15. The Roadrunners' signee likes the fact the school is close to his home and says he has developed a good relationship with the assistant coaches who recruited him.

Last year, Indian Hills sent guard Qiydar Davis to Louisiana Tech, another Conference USA member. Davis is a friend of Harris's from their time together at IHCC and said he looks forward to competing against him.

Harris was a promising high school football player in Louisiana before suffering an ACL tear. The knee injury kept him out of his last two seasons of high school basketball and he admits that his knee still isn't 100% healed. He showed enough in his two years at Indian Hills, however, to warrant a scholarship at a major college and said he is looking forward to getting to UTSA to continue his education and basketball career.

Harris is the fifth player from last year's Indian Hills squad to sign with a four-year university. He joins Akolda Manyang (Oklahoma), Malik Dime (Washington), Jordan Washington (Iona) and Gary Williams, Jr. (San Jose State) as signees.
