Indian Hills Shoots Down Illinois Valley for 25th Straight

IH vs. IV

Ottumwa -- In the first-ever meeting between the two schools in basketball, Indian Hills broke open a close game early in the second half and went on to record a 101-77 win over Illinois Valley on Saturday night at the Hellyer Center.  The result pushes the second-rated Warriors' winning streak to 25 and they remain one of only three unbeaten two-year schools in the NJCAA.

Shane Gatling and Jamel Allen each made five 3-pointers and combined for 49 points in the victory.  Gatling had 15 points and Allen 18 in the second half when IHCC outscored the Eagles 57-40.

Illinois Valley (14-10) also had a one-two punch with Isaiah Tubbs producing 26 points and Keymonta Johnson 25.

The advantage changed hands six times in the early stages of the opening half when the two teams exhanged one-point leads.  Gatling hit a trio of early threes, one of them giving IHCC the lead for good at 12-10.  He followed with another 3-pointer and Allen drilled one of his own and the quick 9-0 spurt was what the hosts were looking for to gain control.

After Indian Hills increased the margin to 34-20, the Eagles outscored them, 17-10, the remainder of the half and pulled to within seven at intermission.

It was a six-point difference in the second period and then Allen took off.  He banged home a pair of threes and between those makes threw down a slam dunk and the lead was in double figures the rest of the way.

Rob Montgomery followed Allen's burst with a field goal, part of a season-high 15-point effort for Montgomery.  He also collected a team-best eight rebounds and blocked a couple of shots.

Gatling hit 5-of-12 3-point attempts and leap-frogged four former Warriors to rise to 8th in the school single-season list with 80 threes.

Tomas Woldetensae matched Montgomery with 15 points for IHCC.  He hit three treys and the Warriors made 14, their second-highest total for the season.

Indian Hills shot 59 percent overall and drained 14-of-30 3-point tries.

The Warriors have another non-conference test on Tuesday night when they host North Central Missouri.
