Coffeyville Dumps IHCC

Coffeyville

Coffeyville, Kansas -- Indian Hills knew going on the road to take on No. 4 Coffeyville, a veteran team with eight players back off last year's national tournament squad, in just their third game of the season would be a tall order, and it turned out to be just that as the Warriors were blasted by the Ravens, 87-70, on Saturday night.

The Warriors led only once -- 3-2 after a Lance Singh 3-pointer -- in suffering their first loss of the season and their first regular-season defeat in over 20 months.  Their lone loss last year came in the NJCAA National Tournament.

Turnovers proved to be a big part of IHCC's undoing.  They committed 25 and Coffeyville scored 32 points off those mistakes.  The Warriors turned the ball over 10 times in the opening half, a big reason why they found themselves down, 44-35, at intermission.  After Indian Hills' Iziah James started the second period with a 3-pointer to shave the CCC lead to 44-38, the Ravens took off - outscoring the Warriors, 18-2, in a game-deciding stretch.

After trailing by 22, 62-40, IHCC tried to mount a comeback, getting to within 12 after a pair of free throws by James.  But Coffeyville responded by quickly building the advantage back to 18 and they coasted to the win in only the third meeting ever between the schools in basketball.  It was the first time an IHCC team played in Coffeyville in 32 years.  The only other game between the two, before Saturday, was three years ago when the Warriors blew out the Ravens, 103-79, at the Hellyer Center.

Marvin Johnson poured in 28 to lead all scorers on the night, the CCC sophomore tallying 17 of his total in the first half.  Coffeyville shot 52 percent for the game compared to the Warriors' 39 percent.

Anthony Bratton had a team-high 12 points for Indian Hills.  James added 11 and Tomas Woldetensae 10.

After opening the season with three straight games against Jayhawk Conference foes, the Warriors return home for a pair of games this weekend against teams not from Kansas -- Howard (Tex.) JC on Friday and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Saturday.
