The two programs separated by just 78 miles will meet for the second time this season as both squads enter the homestretch of the regular season.

SETTING THE STAGE

Indian Hills (21-2, 2-0), winners of six in a row, are coming off an 81-61 road victory at Sauk Valley Community College on January 30, the team's fourth consecutive double-digit victory.

The Blackhawks (18-5, 1-1) won its last outing, a 75-67 win at Malcolm X College (IL) on January 28. After winning 10 straight games, Southeastern is just 2-2 in its last four contests, including a loss to the Warriors on January 14 in West Burlington, IA.

STARTING FIVE

  • Saturday's game marks the seventh contest against a nationally ranked opponent this year for the Warriors. Indian Hills is currently 5-1 against nationally ranked foes this year.
  • Sophomore Enoch Kalambay has been named this week's ICCAC Athlete of the Week after collecting his third consecutive double-double last week.
  • Don McHenry closed out the month of January averaging 18.4 points per game in seven contests, including three games of at least 20 points.
  • Indian Hills has 13 games this year with more than 10 three-point field goals in a game. The Warriors rank seventh in the nation with 10.1 three-point shots made.
  • The Warriors boast the highest attendance in the nation this year with 4,866 coming through the doors of the Hellyer Center. In the two home games vs. Southeastern last season, more than 1,600 fans attended.

LAST TIME OUT

In true Indian Hills-Southeastern lore, the January 14 matchup wasn't decided until the closing seconds of the game. The Warriors edged the Blackhawks 59-56 at Loren Walker Arena after trailing by 12 points at halftime.

Don McHenry led the way for the Warriors with 19 points while Truth Harris added 17 points. The Blackhawks saw three players go for double-figures, including 13 each from Davion Bailey and Jack Wetzel.

SERIES HISTORY

Saturday's matchup will be the fifth consecutive meeting where both teams are nationally ranked.

  • Over the previous 129 matchups that span through the 1971-72 season between the two programs, both sides have scored an identical 9,714 points in the series.
  • Including this year's matchup, the two teams have played in 25 games decided by three points or less. Indian Hills holds a 13-12 advantage in those matchups, including a 5-3 record in 1-point games.

    • In the eighth-lowest scoring matchup in series history, the Warriors stormed back from a 12-point deficit to defeat the Blackhawks at the Loren Walker Arena.
  • February 5, 2022 - Indian Hills 67, Southeastern 66
    • Braxton Bayless cemented his name in the record books in this historic rivalry as the sophomore banked home a 35-foot runner at the buzzer to give the Warriors the one-point victory. Sophomore J'Vonne Hadley, who provided the game-winning assist, added a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
  • January 16, 2016 – Indian Hills 104, Southeastern 61
    • Indian Hills used a barrage of three-pointers, 15 in total, to rout Southeastern 104-61 in West Burlington. The win was the largest margin of victory for Indian Hills in the all-time series. Dazhonetae Bennett led the Warriors with a season-best 20 points in the win.
  • March 7, 2009 – Southeastern 81, Indian Hills 80
    • With 56 combined wins entering the contest, Indian Hills and Southeastern squared off in the NJCAA Region XI Championship in Ottumwa. Indian Hills Athletics Hall of Fame member Dwight Buycks poured in a game-high 32 points, including a pair of free throws to give the Warriors an 80-79 lead with 37 seconds to play. Southeastern responded with the eventual game winner from Brian McMikle with seven seconds to go to lift the Blackhawks to the 2009 NJCAA Region XI title.
  • February 26, 1998 – Indian Hills 72, Southeastern 71
    • With an undefeated record and a shot at a second consecutive national championship on the line, the Warriors survived a scare from the Blackhawks in the opening round of the State Tournament. Led by NJCAA Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Pete Mickeal's 23 points, the Warriors knocked off Southeastern 72-71 and went on to win its second of three straight NJCAA National Championships.

SCOUTING THE BLACKHAWKS

Despite its recent woes, Southeastern ranks among the nation's best as the Blackhawks enter Saturday's game No. 18 in the national rankings.

  • While Southeastern ranks 110th in the nation in total three-point shots made, the Blackhawks are shooting at an efficient rate from beyond the arc. The team's 39.3 percent clip ranks seventh nationally.
  • The Blackhawks are limiting their opponents to just 37.3 percent from the floor, the sixth best mark in the NJCAA.
  • Sophomore Davion Bailey leads the Blackhawks with 15.3 points per game this year and has hit in double-figures in 10 of the team's last 11 outings.
  • Four of the five losses for Southeastern this year have been by single digits. The team's last two losses have been by a combined five points.

COACHES VS. CANCER

Saturday's game marks the second annual Coaches vs. Cancer contest between the Warriors and the Blackhawks. Last season, the two teams came together to raise $5,000 towards the American Cancer Society.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Warriors have just six regular season games remaining after Saturday's matchup. Indian Hills will travel to Missouri State University – West Plains on February 6 to take on the Grizzlies. The Warriors previously defeated West Plains 79-60 at the Hellyer Center on November 19.
