WALTERS POWERS NO. 3 IHCC PAST HIGHLAND IN OT

Freport, IL –  No. 3 Indian Hills Men's Basketball staved off a late rally to knock off Highland Community College (IL) in overtime Tuesday night, dropping the Cougars 94-88 on the road. The Warriors move to 19-4 on the year, including a 9-0 mark on the road.

The Warriors were led by a heroic performance from sophomore Trenton Walters (Frisco, TX/Radford). Walters tallied a career-high 27 points, including nine in the overtime session to power the Warriors. Walters proved to be the go-to for the Warriors from start to finish as the guard tallied nine assists and eight rebounds, also career-high marks.

Sophomore Joao Das Chagas (Niquelândia, Brazil/Arizona Western) tallied a double-double for the Warriors with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Das Chagas is now averaging 11.3 rebounds over his last three contests. Freshman Vladyslav Semerych (Horishni Plavni, Ukraine/Cherkassy) held his own in the paint for the Warriors with 10 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks on the night.

As a team, the Warriors found success from beyond the arc, connecting on 10 of 16 three-point shots (62.5 percent) as Walters finished the night 3-4 from long-range. Quinton Perkins II (Dallas, TX/Tarleton State), this week's Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Athlete of the Week, along with Mason Costello (Waukee, IA/Waukee) and Kayden Nation (Peoria, IL/Western Nebraska) each knocked down a pair.

Perkins, who finished the night with all eight of his points in the opening half, once again filled the stat sheet with five assists, five rebounds, three steals, and a block.

In the team's first road test in 20 days, the Warriors fell behind early, but five quick points from Walters put Indian Hills back on top in the opening minutes of play. A series of three-point shots, along with three dunks down low from Das Chagas pushed the lead to double digits in the opening half as the Warriors took a 44-35 advantage at halftime.

The Warriors maintained a marginal lead through the early portions of the second half, but a late surge from the Cougars put Indian Hills on tilt. Highland eventually cut the deficit to single digits with under six minutes to play. With under a minute to go, the Cougars hit a deep three-point shot to force overtime as a last-second attempt from the Warriors fell short.

In the extra session, Walters took over, putting home a floater before burying a three-point shot to give Indian Hills the lead for good. Walters hit a running lay-up with just over two minutes to go to extend the lead to 89-86 as the Cougars were never able to recover.

The Warriors are now 8-1 overall in overtime games dating back to the 2018-19 season.

Indian Hills' 62.5 percent three-point shooting mark on Tuesday night is the best percentage since the Warriors shot 63.3 percent (19-30) from three-point range against Moberly Area Community College on February 9, 2019.

The Warriors move to 9-1 all-time vs. the Cougars with the win.

Indian Hills is back in action Friday night at the Hellyer Center with a 7:00 PM tip-off against Elgin Community College (IL).
