Warrior Men Get Draw in Soccer Opener

MSoc

Spencer, Iowa -- Indian Hills and Iowa Lakes battled to a 1-1 tie in the Region XI opener for both teams on Saturday.  It was the first regular-season test of the year for the Warriors, ranked 12th in the preseason NJCAA Division I poll after winning the region postseason tourney last year and advancing to the NJCAA national tournament.

Iowa Lakes played short-handed after the first 15 minutes of Saturday's match after losing a player to a red card.  But the Lakers responded almost immediately on a goal from Connor Goldsworthy in the 18th minute to open the scoring.

Indian Hills answered about eight minutes later when freshman Vincent Grillot's shot when in off the post to even the score at 1-all.  Freshman David Medeiros was credited with an assist on the Grillot goal.

Neither team was able to score after that as the defenses dominated play over the last 80-plus minutes, including two scoreless 10-minute overtime periods.

The Warriors were also forced to play a man short after Karim Oullami drew his second yellow card late in the second half.

IHCC keeper Matthew Desfossez had six saves.  The Warriors managed six shots on goal with Grillot and Victor Hugo both getting two.

The home opener for the Warriors will be this Friday when they host Jefferson (Mo.) College at 4:00 at the IHCC field.
