CHAVARRIAGA, SCARDUZIO EARN WEEKLY HONORS

Ottumwa, IA – Freshman Mateo Chavarriaga (Cartagena, Colombia/Montessori) put together his best performance of the season, tallying a goal and an assist to send the Indian Hills Men's Soccer team to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DI Men's Soccer Region XI Semifinal round. For his efforts, Chavarriaga has been named the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Athlete of the Week.

Along with Chavarriaga, freshman goalkeeper Matteo Scarduzio (San Secondo Parmense, Italy/Fabio Bocchialini) has been recognized as the ICCAC DI Men's Soccer Goalie of the Week after lifting the Warriors to victory.

Chavarriaga helped the Warriors upend Iowa Central Community College 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in the NJCAA Region XI First Round. The freshman, who had not recorded a point throughout the regular season, connected with Shogo Koike for an assist off a corner kick in the 53rd minute to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. Chavarriaga then followed-up with a set-piece goal of his own, a direct kick from 30 yards out to double the Indian Hills lead.

Scarduzio put together two solid performances in goal last week for the Warriors, including a seven-save effort in a 1-0 loss to No. 13 Illinois Central Community College. Scarduzio followed up with postseason herorics against Iowa Central, stopping a pair of shots and keeping the Tritons off the scoreboard for the final 27 minutes to preserve the win. Scarduzio leads the ICCAC with 59 total saves on the year.

With the win against Iowa Central, the fifth-seeded Warriors advance to the NJCAA Region XI Semifinal round to take on top-seeded Iowa Western Community College. The two sides will square off at 3:30 PM in Council Bluffs, IA.
