Softball Awards Announced

Ottumwa -- Individual awards for the 2014 season were announced this week by Indian Hills softball coaches Jim Overturf and Laura North. The awards are voted on by team members.

These awards are in addition to the All-Region choices which were released at last weekend's Region 11 tournament.

The IHCC Team Awards for 2014 include:

Most Valuable Player -- Kendle Schieber

President's Award (for leadership) -- Laci Moore

Warrior Award (for hustle, attitude and commitment) -- Kendle Schieber

Outstanding Offensive Player -- Lindsay Moore

Outstanding Defensive Player -- Chelsea Griffiths

Most Improved Player -- Nikki Boomgarden

Newcomer of the Year -- Lindsay Moore

The Warriors finished the year with a 23-25 record, with 14 of the losses by one or two runs. It was the inability to win a larger percentage of those close games that was frustrating for head coach Jim Overturf. But, the coach says it didn't diminish the fact that this year's Warriors were a team he liked coaching. "I really enjoyed working with this group of young ladies," Overturf said. "They came to the Net Center (the indoor practice facility) and the diamond ready to go to work every day. They always played hard and put themselves in a position to win the game. I know they were frustrated, and coach North and I were too, with all the close games that got away from us, but it certainly wasn't for lack of effort. I was very proud of them all year."

The Warriors lose two of their five all-region choices in Kendle Schieber and Paige Schreiner. All-region picks Lindsay Moore, Emma Rickels and Chelsea Griffiths will return to lead next year's squad. Nine high school players have already signed letters-of-intent to attend IHCC and play Warrior softball next season.
