SOFTBALL OPENS UP CONFERENCE PLAY SATURDAY

Marshalltown, IA – With a 10-game winning streak in tow, the Indian Hills Softball squad opens its Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) schedule on the road this weekend with a four-game series at Marshalltown Community College.

LEADING OFF

After a 3-6 road trip to open the year in Texas, the Warriors have rolled to 10 straight victories, outscoring their opponents by a staggering margin of 129-13. Indian Hills has scored in double-digits on seven occasions during the winning streak while posting five shutouts along the way. 

Marshalltown opened its season with a trip to Clearwater, FL where the Warriors squared off with a number of nationally ranked foes. The Tigers battled with the likes of defending national champions Florida SouthWestern State, but opened the year with a 1-9 record. Marshalltown currently sits at 3-9 after a doubleheader sweep of Dakota College-Bottineau.

SERIES HISTORY

The two teams have squared off 42 times dating back to the 2001 season with the Warriors winning all 42 contests. Since the Tigers moved to the NJCAA DI level in 2015, the Warriors are 29-0 against the Tigers, including a 4-0 record in postseason play. Indian Hills swept all four games against the Tigers last season, outscoring Marshalltown 40-13.

WARRIORS RACK UP THE HONORS

Coming off an 8-0 week, the Warriors leaned heavily on a pair of individuals who earned conference and national honors for their efforts. Freshman Destiny Lewis was named both the conference and national player of the week after hitting .621 with seven home runs for the Warriors. Lewis drove in 20 runs with 14 extra base hits in total. Lewis currently ranks sixth in the nation with a 1.134 slugging percentage and 12th overall with a .567 batting average.

Along with Lewis, Madi Huisman (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny Centennial) was named the ICCAC DI Pitcher of the Week after going 3-0 in four appearances in the circle without allowing an earned run. Huisman also struck out 20 batters and helped lower her earned run average to a team-best 1.56 on the year.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

  • Freshman Sydney Anderson ranks 10th in the nation with a 1.097 slugging percentage and is batting .500 on the year with 10 home runs and 26 RBI.
  • Madie Anderson has won four consecutive decisions for the Warriors and leads the team with 52 strikeouts on the year.
  • The Tigers are led by Kyleigh Watson who is batting .500 on the year while Emalee Davis is hitting .414.
  • Aspyn Harrison has pitched a team-high 25.2 innings for the Tigers and leads the way with 16 strikeouts.

WHAT'S NEXT

Following the four-game road series, the Warriors return home to take on Ellsworth Community College. Originally scheduled from a Wednesday matchup, the two teams will now face off at 1:00 PM on Tuesday at R.L. Hellyer Field due to impending rain in the Ottumwa area.
