Ottumwa, IA – The weekly accolades continue to roll in for the Indian Hills Softball team as the Warriors collected a pair of Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Athlete of the Week honors. Freshmen Destiny Lewis (Indianola, IA/Indianola) and Ryann Cheek (Eldridge, IA/North Scott) were both recognized by the conference office.
Both first-year student-athletes played a key role in an 8-0 week for the Warriors last week to help extend the team's winning streak to 18 games. The Warriors, who received votes in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DI Softball Poll, are currently 21-6 overall and 6-0 in the ICCAC standings. As a team, the Warriors have collected six total ICCAC Athlete of the Week honors this season.
Lewis lands her second ICCAC Player of the Week honor this year. The freshmen slugger totaled 14 hits and a .609 batting average last week to lead the Warriors to undefeated record. Lewis connected on four home runs and three doubles while driving in 12 runs and scoring 16 times for the high-octane offense. Lewis recorded three hits in half of the team's games and has at least three hits in a game on 11 occasions this season.
The freshmen currently ranks fourth in the nation with a 1.167 slugging percentage, sixth with a .578 batting average, and ninth with a .624 on-base percentage. Lewis' 13 home runs and 105 total bases rank 13th nationally.
Cheek becomes the third different Warrior to land ICCAC Pitcher of the Week honors, joining teammates Madie Anderson (Mt. Pleasant, IA/Winfield Mt. Union) and Madi Huisman (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny Centennial). The southpaw made three appearances in the circle, including her first-career start against Southwestern Community College. In eight total innings, Cheek did not allow an earned run and yielded just three total hits while striking out 12 batters.
In a complete game win over Southwestern, Cheek allowed just three baserunners to improve to 2-0 on the year. The freshman currently boasts a 2.30 earned run average for the Warriors.
Indian Hills hosts St. Charles Community College for a nonconference doubleheader on Thursday at R.L. Hellyer Field in Ottumwa. First pitch is set for 12:30 PM. Warrior fans can catch all of the action via GoHillsTV.
