IHCC DROPS SPARTANS, ADVANCE IN REGION TOURNEY

West Burlington, IA – No. 16 nationally ranked and top-seeded Indian Hills Softball defeated No. 4 seed Southwestern Community College 11-2 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DI Softball Region XI Tournament on Saturday.

The Warriors advance in the tournament to face No. 3 Southeastern Community College at 1:00 PM on Sunday afternoon at the Wagner Athletic Complex. The Warriors improve to 44-8 overall on the year and have now won seven consecutive games.

Indian Hills plated at least one run in each of the five innings of the run-rule shortened affair against the Spartans who won their opening round game 2-1 over No. 5 seed Marshalltown Community College. Freshman Destiny Lewis (Indianola, IA/Indianola) and sophomores Gretta Hartz (Runnells, IA/Southeast Polk) and Breanna Newton (Bettendorf, IA/Bettendorf) each recorded three hits in the win.

The Warriors have now won 15 consecutive NJCAA Region XI Tournament games dating back to the 2016 season. Indian Hills will face Southeastern who upset No. 2 seed Iowa Western Community College 10-1 in its opening round game.

Sydney Anderson (Elkhart, IA/North Polk) delivered the game's first run in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly before Alex Beard (Albia, IA/Albia) delivered a run-scoring single to make it 2-0. Southwestern used a two-run home run in the top of the second to tie the game, but Lewis delivered a two-run shot of her own in the bottom half to regain the lead.

Lewis connected on her second home run of the day and 29th of the seson in the third inning, a two-run shot to make it 7-2 in favor of the Warriors. Kennedy Preston (Carlisle, IA/Carlisle) added a solo home run in the fourth for an 8-2 lead.

Anderson added another sacrifice fly in the fifth before Newton sent an 0-1 pitch over the left center wall for a two-run home run and the walk-off hit that ended the game early.

Madi Huisman (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny Centennial) started the contest in the circle and worked two innings before Madie Anderson (Mt. Pleasant, IA/Winfield Mt. Union) closed out the game with three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win and move to 16-3 on the year.
