WARRIORS NAMED ACADEMIC TEAM OF THE YEAR

OTTUMWA, IA – Four Indian Hills Community College athletic programs have been recognized nationally for academic excellence in the classroom. The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) announced the Warrior baseball, men’s golf, softball, and women’s soccer programs as Academic Teams of the Year.

NJCAA programs are recognized as Academic Teams of the Year for maintaining a team GPA of 3.0 or better for the academic year. The baseball team posted a department-best 3.49 GPA, followed by the softball team’s 3.27 mark. The women’s soccer team achieved a team GPA of 3.22 and the men’s golf team obtained a 3.21 overall GPA for the year.

“To have four programs earn national team recognition in the classroom with as many challenges as we all faced this year speaks volumes about our student-athletes,” stated Brett Monaghan, Indian Hills Vice President, Student Development & Operations and Athletic Director. “The continued academic success of these programs, all while competing at the highest level of competition is truly a remarkable feat.”

The Warrior Softball program has now achieved national team recognition for success in the classroom for 22 consecutive seasons. 15 of the 20 members of this year’s softball team attained a 3.0 GPA or better throughout the year, including eight with a 3.6 GPA or better to earn individual NJCAA accolades. The Warriors capped a 41-13 year on the diamond with a runner-up finish in the NJCAA Midwest District Tournament.

The baseball team extended its stellar streak to 14 consecutive years of national team academic honors. The excellence displayed in the classroom matched the Warriors’ success on the field after reaching the 2021 NJCAA JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, CO. The Warriors posted a 44-16 overall record. 20 Warriors maintained a 3.6 GPA or better throughout the year to earn NJCAA All-Academic status.

The men’s golf team has now achieved a 3.0 GPA for each of head coach John Mulholland’s four seasons. The Warriors put together another impressive season with a seventh place finish at the NJCAA Division I National Championship in Lubbock, TX. Five student-athletes posted a 3.0 GPA or better while three earned individual honors from the NJCAA for achieving a 3.6 GPA or better.

The women’s soccer program has earned three consecutive academic team honors from the NJCAA. In a year that saw the Warriors reach their first-ever national tournament, head coach Anthony Longo’s squad performed just as well in the classroom. 16 student-athletes maintained a GPA of 3.0 or better on the year, including three student-athletes who achieved a perfect 4.0 throughout the academic year.
