Warriors Split 4 Matches at Hutch

Hutch

Hutchinson, Kansas -- The Indian Hills volleyball team got its trip to Hutchinson off to a good start with a pair of wins on Friday -- including one over No. 7 ranked Tyler (Tex.) -- but saw their season-opening win streak come to an end on Saturday in a 3-0 loss to second-rated Navarro (Tex.), and then dropped a 3-2 match to the host Blue Dragons.

IHCC got their second win of the fall against Missouri State-West Plains to start their weekend, winning 25-17, 25-22 and 25-15.  Ana Nunes was solid at the net with a team-best 10 kills and a hitting percentage of .421.  Thayna Birimba registered nine kills and Mariana Rodrigues eight to go along with 13 digs.  Cassia Lemos chipped in 27 assists and Gabriela Cavalcante aided the Warriors' effort with a couple of ace serves.

After that win, Indian Hills upped their season mark to 16-0 by knocking off Tyler, thanks to 19 kills from Rodrigues and a season-high 13 ace serves.  The Warriors won 25-23, 25-22, 25-27, 25-16 to hand Tyler their third loss of the season.  Ana Nunes supported Rodrigues at the net with 13 kills.  Birimba had four of the aces and Lemos and Rodrigues three each, while Cavalcante had two more ace serves.  Rodrigues led with her 12 digs, one more than Suzana Andrade.  Lemos recorded 55 assists.

Navarro showed the Warriors why they are currently rated second in the nation with a 25-18, 25-11, 25-19 victory to begin play on Saturday.  Nunes picked up 10 kills and hit .500 and Lemos had 28 assists.  But IHCC had only one service ace and a season-low 22 digs in suffering their first loss.

The Hutchinson match was a five-setter which saw the winners come back from a set down for the win.  Trailing 2-1 and 18-13 in the fourth set, Hutch turned things around with an 8-1 run and won 25-21 (the Warriors had won the first and third sets, 25-18 and 25-22, and lost the second, 25-20).  After each team got a point to begin the decisive set, Hutchinson scored 10 of the next 12 points.  IHCC chipped away with a 7-2 run and pulled within 13-10 after a Rodrigues kill.  But the Blue Dragons scored the next two points to complete the comeback.  Rodrigues and Nunes led with 14 kills and Nunes hit .357.  Amanda Toyota paced IHCC with 20 digs and Iva Vranic had eight blocks and Sophia Nascimento had six.  Lemos distributed 54 assists and had 164 for the tourney.

Indian Hills looks to bounce back with a trip to Marshalltown on Wednesday followed by a home match with Northeast (Neb.) Thursday.
