WARRIORS SWEEP SWCC

OTTUMWA, IA – Indian Hills ran its winning streak to four consecutive Friday night as the Warriors thumped visiting Southwestern in straight sets, 25-12, 25-7 and 25-12.

After starting the season at 1-5, IHCC has clawed its way back to .500 at 5-5 and is 3-3 in the ICCAC standings.

Southwestern had entered the contest with just one victory, a 3-0 sweep of Southeastern on Wednesday of this week.  The Warriors were intent on keeping the Spartans from making them their second-straight victim, and it was clear from the beginning that there would be no upset.

Indian Hills sprinted out to an 8-1 lead and never trailed in the first set.  The Spartans battled back to within 14-10, but the Warriors quickly pushed it back to 18-10 after a Jentry Schafer kill.  Setter Cassia Lemos continued to shine with an array of assists to front row assassins Gabriela Cavalcante Oliveira, Jarolin de los Santos, Precious Daley and Schafer.  Fittingly, an Oliveira kill would finish off the Spartans in the first set, 25-12.

"It was another solid team performance tonight," said IHCC Head Coach Lyndsey Michel. "Our execution was there from the first serve, and it continued the whole match."

Any thought of a bounce-back performance by the Spartans in the second set was quickly quashed as Gentry reeled off 12-straight points at the service stripe to put the Warriors in command at 13-1.  IHCC would eventually push the lead to 21-7 on a Lemos setter dump.  Sophomore Bailea Yahnke polished off the Spartans with five straight at the service line and Oliveira completed her fifth kill to end set two, 25-7.

Set three was more of the same as the Warriors were allowed to sprinkle in their entire roster, but the results were similar as IHCC competed the sweep with a 25-12 clincher.

"It was a great feeling to get everyone into the line up tonight, everyone has been filling their role, whether it's on the court or on the sideline," Michel added.  "Everyone from top to bottom of the lineup is quite worthy of playing time, and it was a pleasure to get everyone on the court."

Oliveira led the team with 13 kills, followed by 10 from Daley.  Lemos had 28 assists and 10 digs.  The Warriors were 70-of-74 serving including 19-of-19 from Schafer, 15-of-15 from Yahnke, and 10-of-10 from Anja Vranic.  Vranic added three aces.

There will be little time to celebrate for IHCC as the Warriors travel Sunday to Estherville to take on Iowa Lakes (2-10). The Lakers snapped an eight-match losing streak Thursday at Marshalltown, downing the Tigers, 3-1.  Sunday's match begins at 1 p.m. at Laker Gymnasium.
