Ottumwa, IA – For just the second-time in school history, and the first since 2005, Indian Hills Volleyball will play host to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DI Volleyball Midwest District Tournament as the Warriors welcome three teams to the Hellyer Center.

The regular season Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) champions, Indian Hills will host the four-team, single-elimination District tournament with the winner earning an automatic berth to the upcoming NJCAA DI Volleyball National Tournament.

FIRST SERVE

Indian Hills (26-10) has its sights set on the program's fifth trip to the national tournament, and third overall since 2019 after the Warriors earned the right to host the NJCAA DI Volleyball Midwest A District Tournament.

  • Indian Hills enters the weekend having won seven of its last 10 matches to close out the regular season.
  • The Warriors head into the District tournament ranked in the top-10 in 11 NJCAA statistical categories, including assists (1st – 1,574), kills (3rd – 1,611), and digs (9th- 2,064).
  • Sophomore Kinga Michalska's 490 kills on the year ranks third in the nation while the outside hitter's 919 career kills ranks seventh in school history.
  • Freshman Sara Van Gisteren ranks eighth nationally with 426 kills to join Michalska for the most kills between a set of teammates in the NJCAA this year.
  • Sash Vidal has climbed the Indian Hills record books this year and now ranks third all-time with 1,237 career digs.
  • Ana Carolina Westerich enters the weekend sixth in the nation with 1,114 assists while Sabrina Nogueira Da Silva ranks 12th nationally with 567 digs on the year.
  • Saturday's matchup against Malcolm X will be the first all-time meeting, dating back to the 2010 season.
  • Indian Hills is 5-0 all-time vs. Vincennes and 11-12 vs. Missouri State – West Plains, dating back to 2010.

MICHEL'S NOTES

Head coach Lyndsey Michel, in her 12th season at the helm of the Warriors, will look to make it back-to-back trips to the national tournament after a fourth-place showing last year.

"We are excited for the home court advantage and also to welcome some solid competition to Hellyer," Michel stated. "Vincennes and West-Plains could really go either way, so it will be a great match to watch as well. Excited to see the outcome and getting the opportunity for another chance to dance."

SCOUTING THE HAWKS

Malcolm X (3-11) heads into the NJCAA District Tournament after knocking off Kennedy King to win the NJCAA Region 4 championship.

  • Head coach John McEleney leads the Hawks into the District tournament in just his second year at the helm of the program.
  • Kirsten Magee leads the program with 43 kills on the year while Nataly Delgado has added 32 kills.
  • Three different Hawks boast more than 20 service aces on the year, led by Vanessa Ocampo's team-high 27.
  • Rachelle Cauinian paces the offense with a team-high 66 assists this year.

SCOUTING THE GRIZZLIES

Missouri State – West Plains (16-17), coming off a third-place finish at the 2022 NJCAA DI Volleyball National Championship, are under first-year head coach Paty Figueiredo.

  • The Grizzlies make the trek to Ottumwa having dropped four of its last six contests, including the NJCAA Region 16 Championship match to Mineral Area.
  • West Plains is 7-10 on the year in neutral site games.
  • Rosa Brencic's team-high 429 kills rank seventh in the nation this year while tallying 3.49 kills/set.
  • The Grizzlies rank eighth nationally with 4,242 attacks on the year.
  • Three different individuals boast more than 300 digs on the year, led by Eduard Portes' 333.

SCOUTING THE TRAILBLAZERS

Winners of the NJCAA Region 24 Championship, Vincennes (31-6) made an appearance in the last national ranking of the regular season, checking in in the 'Others Receiving Votes' category.

  • Vincennes enters the weekend on a five-match win streak, dropping just two sets along the way.
  • The Trailblazers won the NJCAA Region 24 Championship with a 3-1 victory over John A. Logan College on October 28, the program's third consecutive region title.
  • Vincennes has been battled tested this season, playing the third-most matches and sets of any team in the nation.
  • Led by Pagie Parlanti's 484 kills, which rank fourth nationally, the Trailblazers have posted the second-most kills in the NJCAA this year with 1,698 finishers.
  • The Trailblazers are led by head coach Gary Sien in his eighth season at the helm and has over 700 career coaching victories at the NJCAA level.
