ANKENY – Despite dreary conditions there were several bright spots coming from the first outing of the year for the Indian Hills women’s cross country squad.

The Warriors were led by sophomore Shiggo Shadin as the Des Moines native turned in a time of 22:09.1, which was good enough for 18th place overall.

“It was really impressive to see Shadin open the season running 62 seconds faster than her season opener a year ago,” said IHCC head coach Brent Ewing.  “It’s also encouraging to see her just 23 seconds shy of her 5,000 meter personal best as well.  That’s a testament to all the work she put in this summer.”

IHCC picked up notable performances from a pair of freshmen as Ottumwa’s own Monse Chapula logged a 23:31.5, which landed her in 29th, while Julie Granahan (Corydon, IA) ran 24:53.0, which earned 44th place.  Oskaloosa’s Addy Dykstra rounded out the Warrior finishers as she finished in 27:16.5, which netted her 49th place.

“Our women competed very hard,” added Ewing.  “We were a little too aggressive out of the gun, which likely hurt our ability to finish as strong as we’d like.  But we’ll make those adjustments and be better next time out.”

Indian Hills has a week and a half to make those changes as they race again on September 25 when the Warriors are at Southwestern Community College in Creston.
