Ottumwa --- Texas native Nathan Weant has been selected to lead the Indian Hills golf program. Weant, a graduate of Stephen F. Austin University, replaces Rob Murray as the IHCC head coach, after a stint as an assistant coach at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
A two-year letterwinner on the Texas Tech golf team, Weant then transferred to Stephen F. Austin where he also lettered in golf for two years and earned his bachelor's degree in business administration.
Following his graduation, Weant returned to Texas Tech and worked in their athletic department. He was involved in ticket sales and promotions at the school.
As a player, Weant was a member of three different top-25 ranked teams in NCAA Division I golf, had five top-ten finishes and three more top-25 finishes in college, and recorded the 8th-lowest tournament scoring average in program history at Stephen F. Austin. The new IHCC head coach was also named a Cleveland/Srixon All-American Scholar in 2016 and was a class 4-A three-time first-team all-state selection while in high school in Texas.
Weant takes over an Indian Hills program that was runner-up at last spring's NJCAA National Tournament and returns three golfers from that squad, including the individual champion, Ricky Sanders. The Warriors won four national titles in a five-year span from 2011-15.
Indian Hills begins the 2017 fall schedule in the Mt. Mercy Invitational this weekend.
Murray left IHCC to take a position as an assistant coach at Kansas State University after two years as Indian Hills' head coach and two more years as an assistant under Mike Hagen.
