SIMMONS MEDALS, WARRIORS PLACE THIRD

Storm Lake, IA – Sophomore Aliyah Simmons (Miami, FL/North Miami) took home first-place honors in the 600-meter run at the 2022 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI Indoor Championship to lead the Warriors to a third-place team finish.

In a record-breaking season for Simmons, the sophomore captured the region championship with a facility record time of 1:34.44, leading wire-to-wire to pace the Warriors. Simmons, who owns the top time in the nation in the 600-meter run, also propelled the women's 4x400-meter relay quartet to a second-place finish with a time of 3:52.36, breaking the previous facility record. Simmons was joined by Aimaya Drummond (San Antonio, TX/San Antonio Brennan), Temira Goods (Des Moines, IA/Des Moines Hoover), and Kahliyah Anderson (Texarkana, TX/Texas).

As a team, the Warriors placed third overall behind region champion Iowa Western Community College and runners-up Iowa Central Community College. The Warriors scored 113 total team points.

The Warrior quartet of Lizeth Flores (Harvard, IL/Harvard), Jadashia Catlin (Palm Coast, FL/Matanzas), Kaylen Pryor (Chicago, IL/South Shore International Prep), and Isabelle Mellin (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) placed second overall in the Distance Medley Relay with a time of 13:53.25.

Siby Yao (Leesburg, VA/Riverside) established a new school record for the Warriors in the triple jump with a mark of 11.40-meters to earn second-place honors.

Kayla McCray (Miami, FL/North Miami) and Jia Lewis (Minneapolis, MN/Minneapolis Edison) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the women's 60-meter dash as both student-athletes have now hit national qualifying marks for the event. Janyla Hoskins (Dubuque, IA/Dubuque Hempstead) placed sixth overall in the event with a time of 7.77.

Anderson, Lewis, and McCray all had strong showings in the women's 200-meter dash as well, placing fourth, sixth, and seventh, respectively. Anderson's fourth-place finish came in a time of 25.10.

The Warriors were well-represented on the podium in the women's 400-meter dash as Drummond, Goods, and Catlin went 2-3-4 in the event. Drummond's silver medalist showing came with a personal best time of 57.84.

Sophomore Monse Guerrero (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) broke her own school record once again in the 3,000-meter run to place third overall with a time of 11:32.39.

The Warriors will now head off to the NJCAA Indoor National Championships March 4-5 in Pittsburg, KS at the Robert W. Plaster Center.
