SIMMONS SPRINTS TO SCHOOL RECORD AT DRAKE RELAYS

Des Moines, IA – Sophomore Aliyah Simmons (Miami, FL/North Miami) broke the Indian Hills Women's Outdoor Track & Field record in the 800-meter run at the Drake Relays on Thursday night.

The 2022 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Indoor National Champion in the 800m, Simmons competed in the second heat of the 800m event at the historic Drake Relays and broke her own school record with a time of 2:12.50. Simmons' previous best mark in the event came at the KT Woodman Classic in Wichita, KS on April 6 with a time of 2:15.71. The school record mark now ranks as the fourth fastest time in the NJCAA this year.

Simmons, who ran a 2:10.55 indoor time at the NJCAA National Championship to become the program's first-ever national champion, placed 13th overall in a highly competitive field. Simmons was the lone junior college athlete invited to compete in the event. Simmons ran the sixth fastest 400-meters during the event in a field of 18 runners and held steady in second-place at the halfway mark during her heat.

Kansas State's Kassidy Johnson took home first-place in the event with a time of 2:06.39.

As a team, the Warriors will be participating in eight events on Friday during the Drake Relays. Next up for Simmons will be the NJCAA Region XI Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 7-8 in Council Bluffs, IA.
