MARQUES, PIRRI POWER WARRIORS IN OPENER

IHCC CLASSIC TOURNAMENT HOMEPAGE

Ottumwa, IA – Sophomore Gustavo Marques (São Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Anglo Indaiatuba) and freshman Fernando Pirri (Cordoba, Spain/IES Francisco de los Rios) tallied a pair of goals each to power the No. 17 nationally ranked Indian Hills Men's Soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Southwestern Illinois College on the opening day of the IHCC Classic.

Marques, the third-leading goal scorer a season ago for the Warriors, tallied a pair of first half goals before Pirri pushed the advantage in the second half with the freshman's first two collegiate scores. The Warriors move to 1-0-0 on the year after winning their first season opener since the 2019 season.

Head coach Felix Vu became the first coach in Indian Hills Men's Soccer history to win his coaching debut for the Warriors.

As a team, Indian Hills outshot the Blue Storm 17-7, including a 12-3 advantage over the final 45 minutes of action. The Warriors tallied 12 corner kicks to just three for Southwestern Illinois.

In goal, sophomore Kaz Kromwijk (Schenkeldijk, Netherlands/Stedelijk Dalton Lyceum Kaptynweg) was tested just twice on the day to pick up the complete game victory, his seventh career win as a Warrior.

Marques wasted little time in putting the Warriors on the board as the sophomore rifled a shot from 25 yards out off a throw-in assist from Lucas Bauer (Oldenburg, Germany/IGS Kreyenbruck) just 3:18 into Friday's match. Indian Hills maintained the one-goal advantage until the Blue Storm netted the equalizer in the 29th minute. Less than five minutes later, it was Marques who put Indian Hills back on top with a header from close range on an assists from Jack Donlan (Manchester, England/Oldham Sixth Form) and Andrea Oriolesi (Viterbo, Italy/Paolo Ruffini Scientific).

Indian Hills took the one-goal lead into the second half before Pirri converted the Warriors' first penalty kick of the year in the 68th minute to double the advantage. Pirri gave the Warriors an insurance goal in the 83rd minute as the freshman received a low-lying cross from the left side from Bauer to give Indian Hills its first win of the year.

The Warriors return to action on the final day of the IHCC Classic on Sunday to take on cross-division foe Marshalltown Community College at 3:30 PM. Southwestern Illinois will take on Marshalltown on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 PM at the Indian Hills Soccer Complex.
