Ottumwa, IA – Freshman Mateo Limardo (Miami, Florida/Parkway South) tallied two goals in his collegiate debut to lead No. 7 Indian Hills Men's Soccer to a 2-1 victory over Prairie State College on the third day of the IHCC Classic. The Warriors move to 2-0-0 on the year.
Making his inaugural appearance for the Warriors, Limardo found the back of the net in the closing minutes of the first half before adding a second strike in the opening minutes of the second frame. The Warriors allowed a late penalty kick goal to the Pioneers but held on to pick up their second victory of the year.
Freshman Bernardo Manzano (Palmas, Brazil/Layton Christian Academy) secured the complete game victory while allowing just the one penalty kick goal after posting a shutout in his collegiate debut on Thursday.
The Warriors outshot the Pioneers 17-10 on the day, including six strikes on target. The Warriors earned four corner kicks in the win.
After managing to maintain possession for a large part of the first half, the Warriors finally hit paydirt at the 42.37 mark as Santiago Cardenas (Lima, Peru/Bruno Traverso Damonti) slipped a ball through the top of the box to connect with Limardo. The freshman fired a strike across the net that found the far corner for the initial 1-0 lead.
Just 2:10 into the second half, Limardo struck again to double the advantage. Lucas Bauer (Oldenburg, Germany/IGS Kreyenbruck) out-maneuvered the Pioneer defense near the endline and found Limardo open in the box. The freshman beat a defender one-on-one before finding the back of the net for the 2-0 lead.
Prairie State's goal came in the 87th minute to erase the clean sheet opportunity, but the Warriors prevailed for the victory.
The Warriors' homestand continues with a home date against district foe Lincoln Trail College (IL) at 3:00 PM on August 28.
