Ottumwa, IA – Freshman forward Santiago Cardenas (Lima, Peru/Bruno Traverso Damonti) of the No. 1 nationally ranked Indian Hills Men's Soccer squad has been named the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) DI Men's Soccer Athlete of the Week, announced Tuesday afternoon.
Cardenas becomes the eighth different Indian Hills Men's Soccer student-athlete to capture ICCAC Athlete of the Week honors after a remarkable performance for the Warriors. In the team's lone game last week, Cardenas recorded his first-career hat trick to power the Warriors past No. 19 Lewis & Clark Community College (IL) 5-4.
In a thrilling matchup of nationally ranked clubs, Cardenas powered the Warriors to their fourth win and fifth result over a nationally ranked program this year. The freshman found the back of the net in the 10th minute for an initial 1-0 lead before putting home two goals in the span of 3:15 late in the second half to rally the Warriors past the Trailblazers.
Cardenas tallied the eventual game-winning goal at the 67:47 mark, the freshman's second game-winner of the year. Cardenas ranks second on the team this year with nine goals while his 20 points rank third overall for the Warriors.
Cardenas and the Warriors are back in action Wednesday evening with an ICCAC showdown against No. 4 Iowa Western Community College. Action from Council Bluffs gets underway at 5:00 PM.
