MARENGO, OH – The Indian Hills Sports Shooting squad took part in the Scholastic Clays and Trap Program (SCTP) Collegiate Nationals at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo Ohio last weekend. The four-day event produced a national runner-up finish for the Warriors in Division IV.
Head Coach Jake Stalzer estimated that his squad shot at approximately 7,000 targets over the four-day period and a handful of the IHCC competitors took part in every event, shooting at a total of 900 targets each.
Fifteen teams from across the nation were represented at the competition with a total in excess of 200 shooters competing.
"Ten of the eleven Indian Hills shooters that made the trip with us either contributed to either that overall team score or an individual event's score, which I'm very proud of," Stalzer said. "Our HOA (High Overall) score of American Trap, American Skeet and Sporting Clays combined was 2,425/3,000 which was good enough for a second place finish in our division."
The SCTP event included a few disciplines that the Warriors weren't used to, but Stalzer saw it as an opportunity for growth and a chance to gain experience.
"Some of the disciplines we weren't so familiar with," Stalzer explained. "The Olympic events of Bunker Trap and International Skeet were relatively new for us, however, we didn't fair too badly for not having much experience with them."
Oskaloosa prep, Aaron Vos led IHCC over the weekend placing first in Sporting Clays, International Skeet and Bunker Trap. In addition to Vos' three titles, he picked up bronze in the American Skeet and 5-stand competitions. Josh Meyer also collected top honors for the Warriors in the American Trap competition. Cooper Shelton earned third place in Bunker Trap.
The ladies were led by Camme Barber, who took silver in both American and International Skeet.
The IHCC shooters have two events remaining on their 2021 spring calendar as the Warriors will make the short trek to the Oskaloosa Izaak Walton League on April 10-11 for the Iowa SCTP Collegiate Skeet & Sporting Clays competition before wrapping up the season on April 17 at the SCTP Collegiate State Trap meet at Stockdale Gun Club in Ackley, Iowa.
