IHCC SHOOTERS TOP KIRKWOOD

IHCC SHOOTERS TOP KIRKWOOD

OTTUMWA – Same score… different result.

A week ago a 464 tally resulted in a loss to Southeastern in ICCAC sports shooting virtual dual meet action, but this week the same score netted Indian Hills a 464-353 victory over Kirkwood.

The win moves IHCC to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the ICCAC East Division heading into the team's last conference dual of the fall season.

Freshman Josh Meyer continued to lead coach Jake Stalzer's squad as he topped the individual standings for the fourth time in five outings this fall for Indian Hills.  Meyer's score of 97 led all shooters, earning him the gold medal.  Sophomores Andrew Appleget and Dylan Marlay chipped in at second and third place, each with a score of 93.   Charles Gibson's 91 and Carson Boyse rounded out the IHCC scorers with a 91 and 90, respectively.

In the ladies division, sophomore Katelyn Talbert picked up the silver by hitting 90-of-100 targets, while freshman Camme Barber collected the bronze, shooting an 89.

Looking ahead, IHCC wraps up the ICCAC fall season with its final dual against East Division-leading Hawkeye, who is 5-0 in league action coming in.

"Hawkeye has averaged just over 475 on the year," said Stalzer.  "Having come off of two 464s in-a-row has us feeling pretty well, and if our top five could manage to break two more targets each this week, we have a shot at making our last dual an exciting one."

In addition to the ICCAC finale, Stalzer's competitors have added an in-person sporting clays shoot this Saturday hosted Simpson College.  New Pioneer Gun Club in Waukee will provide the venue for the event, which is an entirely different type of competition than the trap shoots that the team has been competing in all fall in the ICCAC.

"The Simpson shoot is a completely different discipline as well in sporting clays instead of trap like all of our virtual duals have been this year," Stalzer explained.  "Sporting clays is actually really fun and exciting to watch, it's more hunting situations or some people call it golf with a shotgun.  You move from station to station through the woods basically and every station has a different target presentation.  One station may have two crossing targets coming from each direction and another may be a rabbit station where the clay is rolled along the ground."

Shooting begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
