WINDY CONDITIONS HELP THWART IHCC SHOOTERS

OTTUMWA – Blustery weather and a talented opponent in Iowa Western spelled defeat last week for Indian Hills sports shooting as IHCC fell to 1-2 in duals on the season after a 482-446 loss to the Reivers.

As has been the case all season, the two teams tallied up scores during the week on their home courses and reported them to the conference.  The ICCAC then compiled the resulting scores and Coach Jake Stalzer's fell by 36 birds in less than ideal conditions.

"First of all, credit to a solid Iowa Western squad," said Stalzer.  "But, last week was the first week we've had to shoot in any type of win, and it showed as we put up our lowest score of the year so far.  We just did not adjust to the wind well and that really hurt us."

Similarly to the season opening loss to Southwestern, Stalzer had emphasized the importance of his top five scoring in the 90s to be competitive, and after getting his wish the following week (a victory over Northeast Iowa), his troops regressed to the 80s for the most part versus Iowa Western, making a recipe for another loss.

"I was happy to see the consistency of our top five scorers being within one target of each other," added Stalzer.  "However, two or three more targets hit each would have made a huge difference."

Freshman Josh Meyer led IHCC scorers for the second time in three outings as the Bettendorf native was the only Indian Hills performer to hit the 90-mark.   The quartet of Aaron Vos, Dylan Marlay, Carson Boyse and Andrew Appleget all came in with tallies of 89 to round out the team total of 446.

Iowa Western's Weston Zolck led all shooters with by hitting 99-of-100 targets.

The loss keeps Indian Hills in third place in the IHCC East Division, trailing leaders Hawkeye (4-0) and Southeastern (3-1).  The week ahead is a busy one for Stalzer's troops as they have two more virtual duals.

"This week we have two conference matchups with Southeastern and Kirkwood," said Stalzer.  "This will be a big week as all three of us are pretty evenly matched scoring average-wise, and this will more than likely determine who ends up towards the top of the East Division standings."
