Ottumwa, IA – Sophomore Josh Meyer (Bettendorf, IA/Bettendorf) took home top medalist honors to lead the Indian Hills Sports Shooting team to a 470-459 victory over Southwestern Community College at the Ottumwa Izaak Walton League Friday night. The competition was the team's first dual meet of the season.
"Very happy with our first performance of the season," stated head coach Jake Stalzer. "Four of our top five are first year kids to the team so that's great to see. Josh Meyer, our returner in the top-five, was top gun of the night so that was awesome to see he hasn't skipped a beat from his freshman year where he was consistently in our top-five."
Meyer, who entered the year as one of Stalzer's top returners, fired a 96 to top the field. Freshman Dylan Mohr (Moulton, IA/Scotland County) followed up in second place with a 95. Freshman Zachary Ross (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) finished fourth overall on the day with a 94 after battling in a double shoot-off to decide third place. Kolton Kopsieker (Ollie, IA/Pekin) contributed to the team score for the Warriors with a 93 on the day.
Freshmen Connager Logsdon (Centerville, IA/Centerville) and Cole Van Nest (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) each contributed a 92 to round out the scoring for the Warriors. Indian Hills totaled 11 shooters with a score of 81 or better on the day.
On the women's side, freshman Ava Brown (Albia, IA/Albia) totaled a 64 to finish third overall.
"I think we still have room for improvement," Stalzer added. "We'll get better as the season goes on and we get more targets under our belt."
The Warriors' homestand continues with two meets next week at the Izaak Walton League – a dual with Southeastern Community College at 5:00 PM on Sept. 24 and a dual with Northeast Iowa Community College at 11:00 AM on Sept. 25.
