2024 COLLEGE SPORTS COMMUNICATIORS ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN® MEN'S AT-LARGE TEAM
Ottumwa, IA – Sophomore Mason Herrington (Eldridge, IA/North Scott) of the Indian Hills Sports Shooting team has been named a 2024 Second-Team Academic All-American®, announced by the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Wednesday.
Herrington is one of just 23 individuals across the country named to the Academic All-American® Men's At-Large College Division team which recognizes student-athletes from two-year and Canadian institutions. Of the 186 individuals recognized across all five divisions (NCAA DI, NCAA DII, NCAA DIII, NAIA, College Division), Herrington is the only member of a sports shooting program to earn Academic All-American® honors.
"Mason would do anything asked of him on or off the shooting range," stated Indian Hills Sports Shooting Head Coach Jake Stalzer. " Mason always stuck around after practice for extra shooting and helped pick up and fill machines. Mason is the type of student-athlete any coach would want - a high performer in both the classroom and out on the field. Mason's just a genuinely nice human being that we will miss being on the squad."
Herrington led the Warriors to one of their most successful seasons in program history. As a sophomore, Herrington collected three postseason honors after being selected to the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) All-Region Skeet First-Team, All-Region Sporting Clays Second-Team, and All-Region High Overall Second-Team. Herrington collected five top-five finishes on the year, including a pair of regular season runner-up performances.
Herrington's breakout sophomore season culminated with an impressive showing at the 2024 ACUI/SCTP Collegiate Clay Target Championships in San Antonio, TX. Herrington found himself in a 14-way shootoff for the individual trap national championship after hitting 99/100 targets. The sophomore eventually placed ninth overall in the discipline and 18th overall in the CAA final standings which comprised of 231 competitors from around the country.
Academically, Herrington posted a 4.0 cumulative grade point average and graduated from Indian Hills in May with an Associate of Arts degree. Herrington was twice named to the ICCAC Academic All-Region 11 First-Team for his work in the classroom. Herrington was also recently named to the CSC Academic All-District® team.
Herrington will continue his academic and athletic career at the four-year level where he will compete at Coe College.
Along with Herrington, Indian Hills Men's Golf sophomore Jose Carletta (Barquisimeto, Venezuela/Rioclaro), Indian Hills Volleyball sophomore Kinga Michalska (Szówsko, Poland/ZSSCHiO), and Indian Hills Softball sophomore Eva Fulk (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny) were selected as CSC Academic All-Americans®. The quartet becomes the first individuals in Indian Hills Athletics history to earn the distinguished honor as Academic All-Americans®.
