Ottumwa, IA – The Indian Hills Shotgun Sports squad wrapped up a busy weekend of action on the range with a solid showing at the Viktor's Clay Clash in Waukee, IA.
The Warriors opened up competition this weekend with its Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Trap shoot with Hawkeye Community College on Friday afternoon. The Warriors fell to the Redtails 481-458, but saw a number of strong performances.
In its conference shoot against Hawkeye, the Warriors were led by sophomore Aidan Eischen (New Sharon, IA/North Mahaska) who connected on 95 targets to place third overall. Eischen was followed by Jason Stursma's (Harvey, IA/Pella) 94 and Isaac Weir's (Albia, IA/Albia) 92 targets.
Sophomore Haley Byrge (Chilton, WI/Chilton) took home a third-place finish on the ladies side with 87 targets to earn a spot on the podium.
"We started out the jam packed weekend of shooting with our lone home trap dual of the year against Hawkeye," stated head coach Jake Stalzer. "We were thankful to finally have the opportunity to shoot at home and have the support of everyone who helped make sophomore day a great success. We will know better for next time and have a different game plan when we see them again at the state tournament."
The Warriors followed up its league dual with the Viktor's Clay Clash at the New Pioneer Gun Club in Waukee. Indian Hills bounced back in a big way over the weekend, taking fourth overall at the two-day shoot in a field of nine squads. Competing as the lone junior college team at the meet, the Warriors posted 1,547 targets across trap, skeet, sporting clays, and super sporting, finishing just 35 targets outside of a second-place showing.
"Transitioning into the weekend, the team flushed Friday and improved our trap score by 15 targets from the day prior," Stalzer added. "Haley Byrge was strong, shooting a season-best and led the team with a 98 which placed her as the second-highest lady on the weekend. Saturday afternoon brought sporting clays and the team all shot very well and consistent. Our scores ranged from 84 to 81 with Carson Abrams and Emma Adams leading the squad with Emma ending up finishing second overall on the ladies side for sporting. Carson had a great super sporting clays outing shooting a 46 and tying for first-place overall. He continued to roll that into the afternoon with a solid skeet score of 96. Jason (Stursma) was only one target behind with a 95. Proud of the team for battling through the windy conditions, rebounding well from Friday, and having some impressive individual accomplishments along with the team being able to bring home some hardware."
Sophomore Zane Kirubakaran (Ottumwa, IA/Ottumwa) brought home the top High Overall mark for the Warriors with 308 total targets to place 20th overall for the Warriors. Byrge's High Overall mark of 291 targets was good enough for 14th overall out of 41 competitors on the women's side.
Indian Hills is back in action October 12 at Southeastern Commnity College for the ICCAC regular season trap finale at Tri-State Gun Club.
