Meet Schedule: Hawkeye Invitational

The Warriors return to action after more than a month off due to the holiday break. Indian Hills is one of the few junior college programs in the nation that began its indoor season in December, and the Warriors made the most of their time on the track.

Here's a look at where the Warriors stand heading into their first meet of the new year.

MEN'S NOTES

  • Defending national champion Rivaldo Marshall continued to make waves in the track world after setting the all-time, all-conditions NJCAA record in the 800-meter event at the Iowa State Holiday Invitational. Marshall, who won the outdoor 800-meter national title last year, earned two national athlete of the week honors in December for the Warriors.
  • Khalid Hornsby landed ICCAC Athlete of the Week honors after earning two first-place finishes in the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Hornsby currently has the top 200m time (21.47) and the second-fastest 60m time (6.73) in the NJCAA.
  • The Warriors' mid-distance group is sure to be a force this year – four individuals have already broke into the top-4 all-time in IHCC history in the 800-meter run. Along with Marshall, Tyrice Taylor, Mohammed Al-Yafaee, and Cole Reinders put together strong showings in the early portion of the year.
  • Troy Johnson has sights set on All-American honors after shattering the Indian Hills school record in the long jump in December. Johnson's mark of 7.24 is the top distance in the nation so far this year.

WOMEN'S NOTES

  • Freshman Jahzara Hart made a splash in the early portion of her freshman campaign, earning region and national Athlete of the Week honors. Hart currently ranks first nationally in the women's 60-meter dash with a time of 7.53. Hart also owns he fastest all-conditions 200-meter dash time at 24.78. Both times are the second-fastest in school history.
  • Haleigh Hadley also earned national honors in December after setting the new school record in the women's high jump with a mark of 1.70 meters.

EWING'S NOTES

Head coach Brent Ewing breaks down the Warriors' outlook for this weekend in Iowa City.

"I'm looking forward to getting back onto the track and shaking some rust off after winter break. For many teams, this will be their first meet of the year. Fortunately, we've got a few competitions in already so I think our athletes will be able to enter this meet with a little more confidence. My expectation during winter break is to maintain fitness levels. The first meet back from break is all about getting into the rhythm of competing again and focusing on executing our race plans. I'm expecting some very big performances in the upcoming weeks."
