Ottumwa, IA – With another record-breaking performance to tout, sophomore Rivaldo Marshall (Kingston, Jamaica/Calabar) of the Indian Hills Men's Track & Field team has been named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Athlete of the Week.
Marshall captured the 2023 NJCAA Region XI Indoor Championship in the men's 1,000-meter event on Saturday. Marshall set both a facility and meet record wit ha time of 2:25.93 at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, IA. Marshall became the first-ever 1,000-meter champion in school history and has now claimed back-to-back regional championships after winning the 800-meter run last year as a freshman.
The national award for Marshall is the second such honor in a season full of accolades for the defending outdoor national champion. Marshall was also awarded this week's Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Athlete of the Week award.
Throughout the 2022-23 indoor season, Marshall has been named the NJCAA Athlete of the Week twice, the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Athlete of the Week three times, and the ICCAC Athlete of the Week four times.
Marshall currently holds the fourth-fastest 1,000-meter time in NJCAA history as the sophomore heads to the national championship in March. Marshall is also the owner of five school records.
Indian Hills will head to nationals at Washburn University in Topeka, KS March 3-4.
