DAY ONE RECAP: INDOOR TRACK NATIONALS

Topeka, KS – The Indian Hills Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field squads opened up action the 2023 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Indoor Track & Field National Championships on Friday at Washburn University.

MEN'S PERFORMANCES

  • Freshman Troy Johnson (Lancaster, PA/J.P. McCaskey) became the first-ever Indian Hills All-American in the long jump after breaking his own school record with a mark of 7.33 meters. Johnson placed seventh overall, the best finish for a Warrior in program history.
  • Tyrice Taylor (Linstead, Jamaica/Linstead) and Rivaldo Marshall (Kingston, Jamaica/Calabar) placed second and third, respectively in the men's 800-meter prelim round to qualify for Saturday's final. Marshall finished as a runner-up at last year's 800m national championship.
  • Chris Giles (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) and Woyn Chatman (Little Rock, AR/Little Rock Central) both qualified for Saturday's final in the men's 400-mter dash. Giles placed fourth overall with a time of 47.26 followed by Chatman's fifth-place showing at 47.51.
  • Sophomores Roneldo Rock (St. Joseph, Barbados/Grantley Adams Memorial) and Dean Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica/Calabar) both posted personal best times in the 600-meter prelims. Rock placed 10th overall to narrowly miss the finals cut with a time of 1:20.10 while Clarke posted a mark of 1:20.87.
  • Cole Reinders (Sarnia, Ontario/St. Patrick's Catholic) qualified for the finals in the men's 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:30.42. Freshman Mohammed Al-Yafaee (Dohar, Qatar/Aspire Academy) placed 11th overall in the event.
  • Traunard Folson (Jacksonville, FL/Andrew Jackson) powered the men's 60-meter dash group with an 11th place showing in the prelims with a time of 6.80

WOMEN'S PERFORMANCES

  • Freshman Jahzara Hart (Raleigh, NC/Southeast Raleigh) put together two strong showings for the Warriors. Hart qualified for Saturday's finals in the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 24.79 in the prelims. Hart also placed 12th overall in the women's 60-meter dash with a time of 7.62.
  • Zaniya King (Ecorse, MI/River Rouge) placed 13th overall in the women's 200-meter dash while Shanice Cox (Minneapolis, MN/Minneapolis South) hit a personal best time of 25.13 to place 16th overall.
  • Adalin Robinson (Riverdale, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) posted the second-fastest 400-meter dash time in Indian Hills school history to place 15th overall in the prelims with a time of 57.51.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR SATURDAY

The final day of competition at nationals gets underway at 9:30 AM from the Washburn Indoor Facility. Here's what to watch for:

  • Rivaldo Marshall and Tyrice Taylor have their sights set on a national title in the men's 800m run. The duo placed second and third behind Butler's Wail Bourahli's time of 1:53.67. Both individuals have surpassed the 1:49.00 mark this year. The 800m finals are set for 3:05 PM.
  • Sophomore Haleigh Hadley will look to repeat as an All-American in the women's high jump. Hadley set the Indian Hills school record this year with a mark of 1.70 meters which is tied for the sixth-best mark in the nation this year. The event gets underway at 10:45 AM.
  • The men's 4x400-meter relay squad of Woyn Chatman, Tyrice Taylor, Rivaldo Marshall, and Chris Giles enter Saturday with the third-best seed time and will run in the sixth and final heat of the event at 4:10 PM. The Warriors will compete against the top three teams in the nation in Butler, South Plains, and New Mexico.
  • The men's 4x800 squad of Cole Reinders, Roneldo Rock, Jorge Becerra (Lawrenceville, GA/Mountain View), and Mohammed Al-Yafaee will hit the track at 12:45 PM.
  • The Indian Hills Women's 4x400-meter relay squad boasts one of the top times heading into Saturday's final. Adalin Robinson, Shanice Cox, Jahzara Hart, and Jadashia Catlin (Palm Coast, FL/Matanzas) will hit the track at 3:55 PM.
  • Chris Giles and Woyn Chatman will look to secure a top finish in the men's 400m dash at 2:45 PM.
