Former Indian Hills standout Caleb Cowles was named an Assistant Coach of the track & field program in October, 2023. Cowles oversees jumps and hurdles within the program.
In his inaugural season at Indian Hills, Cowles helped lead the Warriors to a coveted NJCAA DI Men's Indoor Track & Field National Championship. Cowles oversaw a jumps and hurdles program that earned 17 bids to the indoor and outdoor national championships while earning six All-American awards, including four-time All-American Triston Miller and women's outdoor 100-meter hurdle national runner-up Dymonde Nave. Between the men's and women's programs, the Warriors broke eight jumps/hurdles school records while tallying 25 total top-five performances.
A former standout at Indian Hills, Cowles was a National Junior College Athletiic Association (NJCAA) National Qualifier in the high jump during both the 2019 indoor and outdoor campaigns. Cowles owns the second-best mark in school history in both the indoor and outdoor high jump events, clearing a mark of at least 2.00-meters in each.
"Caleb is going to be the perfect compliment to our coaching staff," stated head coach Brent Ewing. "Following his time as a student-athlete at Indian Hills, he had the opportunity to compete and coach under one of the best NCAA Division II staffs in the country while at Minnesota State Mankato. One thing that really stands out to me about Caleb is his desire to grow and learn. It's evident that he is very passionate and excited to work at a place he once called home as a student-athlete."
Following his time at Indian Hills, Cowles moved on to NCAA Division II Minnesota State University, Mankato, competing for three seasons, placing in the top-10 multiple times in the high jump in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Championships.
"I am thrilled to come back to Indian Hills where I got my start in college athletics," stated Cowles. "Indian Hills was a significant part of my own athletic career and kickstarted my goal to get into coaching. Being a student-athlete here opened so many doors for me and lead to the opportunity to continue competing and complete my undergraduate degree and begin my master's program."
Cowles previously served as an assistant to the track and field coaching staff at Minnesota State University, Mankato as part of an internship process during the 2021-22 season. Cowles worked in areas such as recruiting, event management, and training programs.
A native of Bloomfield, IA, Cowles has gained valuable experience as part of the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Meet Operations Crew for the past five seasons while also serving as an Iowa High School State Track Vertical and Horizontal Jumps official. Cowles has also served as an official for the USATF Iowa Games, the USATF Master's Championships, the Drake Relays, Iowa State University Track & Field, and Mankato East High School.
"I look forward to using the skills and knowledge I have developed since attending Indian Hills to place the student-athletes here in an excellent position to accomplish academic and athletic goals."
Cowles received a bachelor's degree in Sport Management with a minor in Athletic Coaching from Minnesota State University, Mankato and is currently working towards a master's degree.
