REIVERS HAND WARRIORS FIRST DUAL LOSS

REIVERS HAND WARRIORS FIRST DUAL LOSS

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA – This wasn’t near as much fun.

Indian Hills returned Thursday to the site of what was an epic performance for the first-year program just four days earlier when it had captured the ICCAC’s North Central District Championship at Reiver Arena.  This time, however, the Warriors failed to keep the momentum that Sunday’s title brought and dropped a 25-14 dual meet to host Iowa Western.

The meet featured the ICCAC’s only two remaining unbeaten squads in the dual team standings, in the No. 5-rated Reivers and N0. 12-ranked Warriors, and it was the hosts that walked away with the victory handing Indian Hills its first-ever dual loss and proving that inaugural IHCC unit still has work to do.

“As a coaching staff and team, this was a humbling experience,” admitted Indian Hills Head Coach Cole Spree.  “We look forward to getting better.”

The night started promising for the Warriors as they took three of the first four matches with Chris Busutil taking a 7-4 decision to open the meet at 125 and Caleb Meekins and Destin Jones adding major decisions at 133 and 149, respectively to make it 11-3, Warriors.

IHCC would only notch one more win the remainder of the night; however, as the Reivers took five of the last six bouts to keep their place atop the ICCAC dual standings.  Only Deron Pulliam’s 6-2 decision at 184 pounds kept Iowa Western from running the table to end the evening.

“Unfortunately, this wasn’t the outcome we wanted,” Spree added.  “It is going to be a great learning lesson for our young team.”

“We didn’t have all of our starting lineup, but that’s not an excuse.  Our guys know that they could have performed better.”

The Warriors (4-1 overall, 3-1 ICCAC) have little time to regroup as another top-ten unit in No. 7-rated NIACC looms on Wednesday.  The Trojans will visit Centerville for another ICCAC showdown at 6 p.m. at the Multipurpose Building.
