GIBBS, MARQUEZ LEAD WARRIORS AT LUTHER HILL

2024 LUTHER HILL INVITATIONAL RESULTS

Indianola, IA – The Indian Hills Men's Wrestling squad, ranked No. 1 in the nation in the latest The Open Mat Team Tournament rankings, made its open debut on Saturday at the Luther Hill Invitational. 11 individuals earned podium spots, including two first-place finishers.

Sophomore Isaac Gibbs (Prosper, TX/Rock Hill) took home top honors in the open 125lb bracket after going 3-0 on the day with all three matches against four-year opponents. Gibbs scored a quarterfinal decision before a 17-4 major to advance to the finals. In the title bout, Gibbs scored a 15-6 major to improve to 8-1 all-time at the Luther Hill Invitational. With his three wins, Gibbs moves into a tie for fourth-place on the career wins leaderboard at Indian Hills.

INDIAN HILLS MEN'S WRESTLING RECORD BOOK

Freshman Andrew Marquez (Rock Island, IL/Rock Island) secured a first-place finish in the freshman/sophomore 197lb bracket for the Warriors. Marquez went 4-0 on the day, scoring a tech fall and major decision on his way to an 11-8 sudden victory in the championship round for his first-career tournament win.

Sophomore Jaquan East (Kokomo, IN/Kokomo) earned a second-place finish in the 174lb open bracket, picking up three wins before falling in the championship. East scored an opening round pin in the second round before earning a 15-9 decision and a 17-1 tech fall.

Arieh Hart (Anna, IL/Anna-Jonesboro) and Gavyn Whitehead (New Castle, IN/New Castle) both made a run to the 141lb freshman/sophomore championship bout. The duo both went 4-0 on the day before defaulting in the finals. Hart's impressive day saw victories by fall, decision, tech fall, and a major decision. Whitehead secured three consecutive tech falls to open the day before a 5-0 decision in the semifinals. Whitehead outscored his opponents 58-8 on the day.

Cinsere Clark (Des Moines, IA/Valley) made a splash in his tournament debut for the Warriors, picking up a third-place finish in the 157lb freshman/sophomore bracket. Clark earned back-to-back tech falls before dropping to the consolation bracket. The freshman rolled through the bracket with four consecutive wins, including a 13-0 major decision in the third-place bout.

Yaveion Freeman (Alton, IL/Alton) won three consecutive matches in the 149lb freshman/sophomore bracket before dropping to the consolation round. Freeman wrapped up the day with a fourth-place finish

Naasir Edmonds (Virginia Beach, VA/Landstown) placed third overall for the Warriors in the 285lb freshman/sophomore bracket after going 5-1 o the day. Edmonds scored back-to-back pins to advance to the semifinal round. After a sudden victory defeat, Edmonds rallied back to earn a 16-5 major and a 6-4 decision in the third-place match.

Mohamed Tarek Abdelhady (Alexandria, Egypt/Sports Military School) also took home a third-place finish in the 174lb freshman/sophomore bracket. Abdelhady went 4-1 in his debut for the Warriors with his lone loss coming in sudden victory in the semifinal round. Abdelhady closed out the day with back-to-back falls in the consolation bracket, needing just 3:40 of mat time.

The Warriors also saw sixth-place finishes from Keaton Morton (Indianapolis, IN/Perry Meridian) and Shehabeldin Mohamed (Alexandria, Egypt/Smouha Military) in the 149lb freshman/sophomore bracket.

Indian Hills returns to action November 8 at Carl Albert State College (OK) in Poteau, OK.
