Mason City, I A – No. 2 nationally ranked Indian Hills Men's Wrestling ran away with an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) victory Wednesday night, dropping No. 7 North Iowa Area Community College 29-14. The Warriors move to 3-0 in duals on the year.
In a top-10 clash in Mason City, the Warriors scored seven victories on the night, including a pair of falls and two tech falls. Indian Hills moves to 6-0 all-time vs. the Trojans, outscoring NIACC 178-78 over the last five seasons.
Sophomore Riley Bettich (Stevensville, MI/Crown Point) put the Warriors on the board at 133lbs as the No. 1 nationally ranked individual picked up a second round fall to even the match at 6-6. Freshman Gavyn Whitehead (New Castle, IN/New Castle) sparked the Warriors at 141lbs with an impressive pin in just 34 seconds to double the Warrior lead.
Sophomore Yaveion Freeman (Alton, IL/Alton), a national qualifier a year ago, put together an impressive showing at 149lbs, coming up just short to No. 1 nationally ranked Cordell White, 4-2.
The Warriors rattled off three consecutive victories to pull away from the Trojans. Brice Coleman (Indianapolis, IN/Indiana Tech) earned a 9-6 decision at 157lbs before Cinsere Clark (Des Moines, IA/Valley) earned a 7-1 decision at 165lbs.
Sophomore All-American and No. 4 nationally ranked Jaquan East (Kokomo, IN/Kokomo) produced an 18-3 tech fall at 174lbs as Indian Hills extended its lead to 23-9.
Andrew Marquez (Rock Island, IL/Rock Island) earned an overtime victory at 197lbs before freshman Naasir Edmonds (Virginia Beach, VA/Landstown) recorded a major upset victory at 285lbs. Edmonds toppled No. 6 nationally ranked Xander Kenworthy with a 7-3 decision.
The Indian Hills Men's Wrestling squad is set for one of the top duals in program history as No. 1 nationally ranked North Idaho College, 14-time NJCAA national champions, head to Centerville, IA on Friday night to take on the Warriors at 5:30 PM.
