River Grove, IL – The Indian Hills Men's Wrestling squad brought home four individual champions in a dominant showing at the Art Kraft Memorial Tournament on Saturday. In total, seven Warriors took home top-three finishes.
Sophomore Isaac Gibbs (Prosper, TX/Rock Hill) became the program's career wins leader after going 3-1 on the day to place third overall in the 125lb bracket. Gibbs picked up a 14-3 major decision, a 17-2 tech fall, and 13-11 decision in the third-place bout as the sophomore moved into sole possession atop the career wins leaderboard with 42 victories at Indian Hills.
Freshman Deontae Forest (Godfrey, IL/Alton) brought home the individual title at 133lbs by running through the bracket a perfect 5-0 record. Forrest earned back-to-back falls to open the day before securing a 9-5 decision in the quarterfinal round over the No. 8 ranked individual in the nation. Forrest advanced to the championship bout where he scored a 7-3 decision over Anthony Bernardo of McKendree University.
Freshman Gavyn Whitehead (New Castle, IN/New Castle) secured top honors at 141lbs with a 4-0 record, including an impressive pin in just 46 seconds in the championship round. The first-place finish is the second of the year for Whitehead who took home the title at the Luther Hill Invitational in November.
Sophomore Yaveion Freeman (Alton, IL/Alton) finished the day 4-0 to take home the 149lb bracket for the Warriors. Freeman opened the day with a 17-1 tech fall while adding a 7-4 decision and a 14-2 major to advance to the finals. In the championship match, Freeman secured a 5-3 decision for the title.
Freshman Andrew Marquez (Rock Island, IL/Rock Island) placed first overall at 197lbs for the Warriors as the No. 3 ranked individual in the nation went 3-0 on the day, including a win over the top-ranked wrestler in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Marquez, who picked up an 18-3 tech fall and a 4-0 decision to advance to the finals, knocked off No. 1 Ghee Rachal of host Triton College (IL) with a 10-5 decision.Rachal is the No. 4 ranked pound-for-pound wrestler in the latest The Open Mat national ratings.
Sophomore Brice Coleman (Indianapolis, IN/Indiana Tech) placed second overall in the 157lb bracket after making a run to the finals. Coleman earned a pair of tech falls and two decision victories before falling 9-3 in the championship match.
Freshman Fekry Eissa (Al Minufiyah, Egypt/Almasaay) brought home a third-place finish at 285lbs by going 4-1 on the day. Fekry, who earned wins by way of fall (1:32), major (16-6), and decision (11-5), suffered his lone defeat to No. 4 nationally ranked Cito Tuttle of Rochester Community & Technical College (MN).
Gibbs, who set individual single season wins record last year as a freshman with 32 wins, moves ahead of former All-American Matthew Lewis' 40 career wins set from 2021-23. Gibbs is also the career leader in tech falls with 12 over the past two seasons and ranks second overall in career major decisions with 11.
The Warriors return to action January 15 at the Multi-Purpose Building in Centerville with an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) clash vs. Iowa Central Community College as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.
