Centerville, IA – The Indian Hills Men's Wrestling squad continued to make waves in the national rankings as the Warriors saw 10 individuals check into the latest The Open Mat National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Men's Wrestling poll. As a team, the Warriors held strong at No. 2 in both the Team Dual and Team Tournament rankings.
As a team, the Warriors climbed one spot in the Team Tournament rankings with 131 points in the latest poll, announced Thursday afternoon. The Warriors trail only Western Wyoming Community College, the defending NJCAA National Champions. With a 7-0 dual record on the year, the Warriors maintained its spot at No. 2 in the Team Dual poll. Indian Hills boasts the most dual wins on the year and is the only undefeated team in the nation with more than two dual wins.
The Warriors saw one individual represented in all 10 weight classes in the latest The Open Mat rankings, including five in the top-five.
Individually, the Warriors are led by a pair of No. 1 ranked wrestlers in their respective weight class. Freshman Andrew Marquez (Rock Island, IL/Rock Island) is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation at 197lbs and is the No. 9 ranked pound-for-pound wrestler in the country. Marquez boasts 17 wins on the year, including victories over the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 9 ranked individuals in the 197lb weight class.
Sophomore Riley Bettich (Stevensville, IN/Crown Point) held strong at No. 1 in the latest 133lb ranking, a spot the All-American has maintained throughout the duration of the season. Bettich is 6-0 in duals on the year, including three wins over top-10 nationally ranked individuals.
Freshman Mohamed Tarek Abdelhady (Alexandria, Egypt/Sports Military School) soared in the latest national poll at 174lbs. Abdelhady, previously unranked, jumped to No. 4 in the nation after winning each of his first four dual bouts on the year, including wins over the No. 5, No. 10, and No. 11 ranked individuals.
Sophomore Jaquan East (Kokomo, IN/Kokomo) checked in at No. 5 in this week's 184lb weight class after previously sitting at No. 4 in the 174lb weight class. East has starred in both weight classes this year, picking up key wins along the way to remain undefeated against junior college opponents this year.
Freshman Gavyn Whitehead (New Castle, IN/New Castle) joined the national rankings at 141lbs after previously going unranked on the year. Whitehead checked in at No. 5 following his championship run at the Art Kraft Memorial to close out the 2024 year.
Sophomore All-American Isaac Gibbs (Prosper, TX/Rock Hill) remained in the top-10 with a spot at No. 7 in the 125lb class while Brice Coleman (Indianapolis, IN/Indiana Tech) held steady at No. 7 at 157lbs. Yaveion Freeman (Alton, IL/Alton) climbed from unraked to No. 8 at 149lbs while Naasir Edmonds (Virginia Beach, VA/Landstown) joined the national rankings for the first time this season at No. 6 at 285lbs. Cinsere Clark (Des Moines, IA/Valley) checked in at No. 11 in this week's 165lb rankings.
The Warriors return to action for the first time in 2025 with the Spartan Invitational on Saturday in St. Louis, MO.
