Ottumwa, IA – The Indian Hills Women's Soccer team erupted with four unanswered goals to upend visiting Iowa Lakes Community College on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors improve to 4-1-2 on the year.
Indian Hills, ranked No. 19 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll, received goals from four different individuals to pull away after an initial goal from the Lakers. The Warriors have now won four straight contests while outscoring their opponents 16-2 along the way.
Freshman keeper María Melendez (Aragua, Venezuela/Aragua Estudiantil) picked up her third win of the season after stopping four shots on the day.
The Lakers struck first with a goal in the 25th minute, but the Warriors responded exactly five minutes later as Sage Prince (Pickering, Ontario/St. Mary's Catholic Secondary) received a long pass into the box from Alexia Bru (Barcelona, Spain/Vall d'Hebrón) and in turn was able to beat the Laker keeper on the first touch for the equalizer. The goal was Prince's fourth of the season.
Less than three minutes later, Milena Leon (Quito, Ecuador/British International School of Houston) delivered a long cross from the left side of the field that found a streaking Rose Blampain (Saint-Martin Boulogne, France/Lycée Professionnel Alphonse Beau de Rochas) on the right side of the box. Blampain delivered a strike in the upper lefthand corner that beat the outstretched arms of the Laker keeper for the Warriors' first lead of the day and Blampain's fourth tally of the year.
The onslaught continued less than a minute later as Leila Karam (Cowansville, Quebec/Cure'-Antoine Labelle) buried a free kick from 40 yards out that found its way under the crossbar. Karam's strike was the freshman's third goal of the season.
Leading 3-1 at the halftime intermission, the Warriors continued to apply pressure on the offensive side of the ball looking for an insurance goal. The Indian Hills defense, anchored by sophomore Shay Polson (Johnston, IA/Johnston) limited the scoring opportunities for the Lakers down the stretch. The Warriors were able to tack on one more goal with just over a minute to paly as Maika Nchanca (Barcelona, Spain/INS Torras I Bages) chipped in a pass from sophomore Marina Flores (Des Moines, IA/Scavo) to seal the victory.
The Warriors outshot the Lakers 18-9 on the day, including an 11-5 advantage on shots on goal. The Warriors also won the corner kick battle with a 5-3 edge.
Indian Hills now has a quick turnaround as the Warriors host visiting Wester Wyoming Community College at 10:00 AM Sunday morning. The Mustangs enter the match ranked No. 13 in the nation.
