Ottumwa, IA – The Indian Hills Women's Soccer team scored a pair of first half goals to outlast visiting Lewis & Clark Community College (IL) on Friday afternoon at the IHCC Soccer Complex. The Warriors improve to 11-5-0 on the year.
Indian Hills saw goals from Arnicka Louis (Castries, Saint Lucia/Sir Ira Simmons) and Rheala Herrera (Aztec, NM/Aztec) in the span of four minutes in the opening half before the Trailblazers struck back before the halftime intermission. The Warrior defense clamped down in the second half to limit Lewis & Clark's scoring opportunities as Indian Hills picked up its second all-time win over the Trailblazers.
Sophomore María Melendez (Aragua, Venezuela/Aragua Estudiantil) stopped a pair of shots in net for the Warriors to secure the victory. Melendez's 11 wins on the year are now tied for fourth-most in school history while the sophomore moves into a tie for second place on the all-time wins list with 16 career victories.
The Warriors outshot the Trailblazers 7-2 in the opening half before Lewis & Clark took six second half strikes to Indian Hills' two. The Warriors were able to put six shots on target compared to just three for the Trailblazers.
Indian Hills opened up the scoring at the 20:24 mark as Maika Nchana (barcelona, Spain / INS Torras I Bages) eluded the Trailblazer defense to find Louis streaking towards the net. Louis buried the close-range strike for her team-leading 11th goal of the year.
Indian Hills doubled its lead at the 24:05 mark as Alexia Bru (Barcelona, Spain/Vall d'Hebrón) corralled a loose ball near the top of the box. The sophomore lofted a pass to the far side of the net that Herrera crashing towards the net. Herrera headed home her first touch for the freshman's first-career collegiate goal.
Lewis & Clark got on the board with just under six minutes to play in the first half as the Warriors went into the break ahead by one. Indian Hills was able to maintain its one-goal advantage over the final 45 minutes of action to secure the win.
The Warriors will now prepare for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DI Women's Soccer District Tournament on October 25 in Council Bluffs, IA. Indian Hills will open postseason play against Crowder College (MO).
