Ottumwa, IA – Sophomore María Melendez (Aragua, Venezuela/Aragua Estudiantil) of the Indian Hills Women's Soccer team has been named the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) DI Women's Soccer Goalie of the Week, announced Tuesday afternoon.
Melendez lands her second-career ICCAC Athlete of the Week honor after leading the Warriors to an impressive opening weekend of the 2024 season. Melendez led Indian Hills to a 3-0 victory over Illinois Central Community College and a narrow 2-1 loss to No. 7 Navarro College (TX) as part of the IHCC Classic in Ottumwa.
Melendez, who pitched three shutouts during her freshman campaign, blanked Illinois Central on Friday afternoon as the Warriors picked up the win in its season debut. Melendez stopped eight shots to secure the complete game victory.
Taking on Navarro, a team that reached the national tournament a year ago, Melendez rose to the occasion and battled with the Bulldogs. The sophomore stopped four shots in the opening half to keep Navarro off the scoreboard through 45 minutes of action. Melendez blocked two more attempts in the second half, but the Bulldogs escaped Ottumwa with the one-goal victory.
Melendez, who earned ICCAC Athlete of the Week honors to open the 2023 campaign, is the first recipient of this year's honor from the league office.
Melendez and the Warriors return to action August 31 at Lewis Central High School in Council Bluffs, IA to take on Western Nebraska Community College at 1:00 PM.
