Centerville, IA – The No. 1 nationally ranked Indian Hills Women's Wrestling team wasted little time in dismantling North Iowa Area Community College in an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) dual on Wednesday night at the Multi-Purpose Building. The Warriors dropped the Trojans 48-5.
Indian Hills moves to 9-1 overall in dual action this year and remains unbeaten in ICCAC action with an unblemished 5-0 record. Indian Hills took 10 of the 11 matches, dropping its only matchup by way of forfeit. The Warriors scored four pins and two techs en route to the victory. In total, Indian Hills needed less than eight total minutes of mat time to secure the win.
After a pair of open weights to start the night, No. 3 nationally ranked Madison Leverknight (Kansas City, MO/Winnetonka) scored a 10-0 tech superiority in just 53 seconds at 116lbs for the Warriors. Sophomore Shammilka Miranda Diaz (Salinas, Puerto Rico/Eugenio Guerra Cruz), wrestling up a weight class at 123lbs, followed up with a fall in 49 seconds to push the Warriors' lead to 20-0. Angelica Vicente Gonzalez (Cidra, Puerto Rico/Eugenio Guerra Cruz), also wrestling up a weight, made it back-to-back falls with a pin 39 seconds at 130lbs.
The Trojans scored their first points at 136lbs with the open weight, but freshman Abbi Smith (Fort Collins, CO / Poudre) took down her opponent at 143lbs with a pin in 1:06 to keep the pressure on the Trojans. No. 8 nationally ranked Jazmine Garcia (El Paso, TX/Quincy) earned a fall in 1:34 at 155lbs to extend the advantage to 34-5.
The Warriors secured two more open weights before the final bout of the night at 235lbs with the return of defending national champion Eliana Bommarito (Hartland, MI/Brighton). Last year's Most Outstanding Wrestler at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Invitational, Bommarito made her season debut Wednesday night with a 10-0 tech superiorty to cap a dominant night for the Warriors. Bommarito remained undefeated throughout her Warrior career.
Indian Hills has now won three of its five conference duals without dropping a match. The Warriors have outscored their five opponents 219-43 on the year.
The Warriors return to action Friday, January 26 at the Spire Open in Leavenworth, KS.
